I have had problems with the gas cap leaking on my 2001 400 4x4. I don't know what the problem could be - have tried sealing up the thread area - but it still leaks like crazy. Also, has anyone had any luck with their fuel guage working for more than 300 miles? My brother had a 300 and it quit working about the same time as mine. I noticed in an earlier thread that Texascat was going to replace his with an '02 model cap. Does this work?

go to your dealer and have him order a cap for a 2002 model. they are a one piece setup and work much better than the original. the cost was $10.

Thanks for the info guys - I'll check the threads to see if it was overtightened, and my brother has a 2002 so I can borrow it to see if that works.

It funny may two cats just did the same thing last week. Weird how the tank has an inch and half tall threaded opening and the cap only goes on the top 2 threads. I'd like to take my dremal tool to it and just cut it even again and see if that works before I buy two new tanks/caps and go throught the hassle of changing it out. Anyone got any ideas or suggestions? How about prices for new tanks for a 2001 400 and 500 AC? Thanks.

Hi dakotart that's the way i fixed mine.Just look out for the dust it went into my gas tank and clogged the filter so i had to take it a part to clean it.It's been a few months since i fixed it and it's working good.

dakotart,

what do you have gorilla wrists or do you put your caps on with a pipe wrench. well i can't pick on you, i messed my gasket up by overtightening the cap. the 2002 model cap works flawlessly and i have noticed no leakage. i sent you a couple emails but i got no reply. i know you have been busy out rubbin' elbows. good luck with getting the coaching position.

later,

Texascat,

Yes I have gorilla grips for hands. I haven't gotten any e-mails from you so check your address again. I got one a while back and I replied to it but haven't heard from ya since. Damn e-mail grimlins! I'll try the new cap too. How is is different from the 2001 caps?

Artcat,

I guess a good cut off wheel will work? Any other advice before I hack up my cat. I think I'll drain the gas first too....spark....KABOOM!

dakotart,

An empty gas tank will actually make a bigger KABOOM than a full one but the resulting fire will be more impressive with a full one. If your going to use a tool that could produce a spark I'd recommend using something to completely seal of the throat of the tank or remove it, fill it with water do the repair, drain the water, put a quart of alcohol in the tank to absorb remaining moisture and then drain it out.

Thanks iowabob, I was thinking about removing the tank all together and letting it sit for a day or two before working on it or just using a new hacksaw. Your comment was right on.
