I don't know why this happens on mine. I hit the rev limiter alot, but that wouldn't affect it, would it?

Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions are appreciated.

I've gone thru about 3 bulbs myself, and its only the taillight not the brake. But I haven't had one go out for around 4 months now. I to would like to know if their is something wrong with the wiring, if thats the case.

P.S. Any pics of your street legal DS?

Biggerisbetter.

Funny I had three lights burn out this past weekend. First was the tail light, then the neutral light stopped working, and then the headlight went. Luckily the headlight burned out when we were almost back to camp from a big dune night ride. Would have been a real pain to have it burn out 3 or 4 miles back in the dunes.

Any info on the lights would be great. Where do I get a new neutral light?

If you guys did a search on this, you would see that the tail light burning out is a common thing with the DS but most people that posted the problem had the new CDI unit. The higher revs of the motor causes an increase in the wattage being produced and causes the tail light to burn out. I believe they fixed this problem with the new Baja DS. The regulator from the Baja fixes these problems. I would think a resistor of some type would keep the wattage down to the tail lights. I'm not sure if anyone has tried this tho.

Shop manual says:

To check this, Start engine, connect a multimeter to battery posts. Set multimeter to Vdc scale. Bring engine to approx. 3500 RPM. If multimeter reads over 15 volts, voltage regulator / rectifier is defective. Replace it.

Reed (BlackDS),
I went back out last weekend to test some new stuff. Worked better but still needs a little tweaking.

I am open for a trip anytime. When ever a group can go I can make it.

When is your next trip?

I'm convinced it's a vibration issue.
I couldn't ride one hour with out my tail light frying. I would put a new bulb in every night when we went anywhere. But it wouldn't last anyway.
A guy that used to post on here a lot (Biggy) said he solved the problem by installing the light assembly from a 4ooEX.
So I looked at my wife's and noticed that it is suspended by two straps. So I cut two pieces of rubber and mounted it just the way a 400's hangs. It seems to be working. I've ridden 2 weekends on the same bulb and I do turn quite a few RPM witch leads to excessive vibration.
One note I'd like to make is that I will eventually put the 400's light on because our's is a bit bulky and swings a bit much.

JeffinRivercity, If I remember correctly from veiwing your site, dont you have some kind of different tail light. If me memory serves me correctly, it is a led type? Just thinking if it was, how well does it work and where did you get it?

DemonDS,
The LED tail,I bought from a BMW motordycle dealer A & S BMW in Sacramento.
It was about $50.00 plus another $7.00 for the diode resister to make it a tail/brake combo.
It is a generic LED light that bolts to a motorcycle license frame
So far it is has been a year since I installed it with no problems.

The company that makes them doesn't have website, but this guys e-mail was on the package
