I just bought a new 2002 trailblazer for the wife. The dealer offered me a 3 year warranty for approx $450. I passed on it, but what is your opinion?

Wouldnt buy an anything without a warranty. Something can go wrong with even the top of the line brands.

Does your wife really plan on riding it on a regular basis? If so, then yes, get the extended warranty. If that machine is ridin on a regular basis by anyone, it will start to wear on some things. Some of these things will not be covered under warranty(like brakes, tires, and the chain and sprockets after the first year) but most everything else. If you have engine or tranny troubles this will be covered. Even the tie rod ends are covered and the struts, rear shock, wheel bearings and axle bearings.

I can also say that you would PROBABLY not have any major problems but you may spend the $450 in parts alone over the 3 1/2 years the warrany will cover. If you have the extended warranty you'll only spend the amount of the deductable($0,$25,$50) and you won't have to do any of the work yourself.

Like I said, if you actually plan on riding this thing on a regular basis, it would PROBABLY do you good to have the extended warranty. If it is only ridin a few times a year, it might not benefit you at all.

I can also say that of all the Polaris extended warranty work I've done the cheapest was $300. The most being $1300. For the average it runs about $600 to $800.

I wouldn't buy an extended warranty for a nickel. It's like gambling against yourself. If the odds were you are going to need it, then they couldn't make any money selling it. I have never bought an extended warranty on anything, and I buy a lot of things. (Very materialistic ) Never once have I wished I had it. Not once could I have used it. Now if something breaks, I am so far ahead of the game that I can pay cash and still be ahead.

Silverv10,

I used to have that same mind set too. Atleast until I became a service manager and seen just how nice it is to have the extended warranty when you need it. If someone does have a major problem that NEEDS repaired I can fix that and usually find a couple little things that I can get covered under the warranty before they get to be a major problem too.

I should also say here that if you are like me and enjoy working on atv's then you'd probably actually save money by not getting the warranty. You'd have to do all the work yourself and pay for the parts at that moment or you'll have to wait for a good time for you to do the repairs and cough up the money for the parts. Otherwise your machine will sit their being broke and I'll bet at that moment you might just say to yourself, "I wish I would have got the extended warranty." Then you wouldn't have worry about having the place, time and tools to do the work not to mention pulling a couple hundred dollars out of your pocket. also, when your working on it and find some other stuff that could be replaced but isn't necessary at that moment, you'll end up tearing it all down again to fix those other things you didn't feel like replacing to begin with. The extended warranty would have covered everything you origanally had a problem with and all the little things that you didn't even see yet.

I guess that it is a good thing that I actually enjoy working on atv's otherwise it would be a major pain in the *** always working on my quad to fix those little things that most people don't even notice. I don't care what kind of machine you have, I bet I could find something on it that should be replaced. Maybe not on a brand new quad but give it 6 months of riding and I'll bet it isn't that same "perfect" quad you bought brand new. They all break and wear out, so I hope you like working on the machines and always have a few hundred bucks laying around ready to be used to fix your machine not to mention the time, place and tools.

Well, time for me to go to work. I have to file an $880 Polaris extended warranty today. The owner of this quad sure made out. He only paid $500 or so for a five year warranty. He still has a couple of years left. I'm sure it will be back for more work before the warranty runs out. He also might be a whiner and complain about those little things so I guess he did good by getting the warranty. This isn't even the first time its been in. Also bare in mind that the warranty company isn't their to fix things because they need it. They are their to fix the things the customer says is wrong. I can't file a warranty on broken parts that the customer doesn't even know about but if he knows before I talk to the warranty company then I can fix all his little heart desires. I know some people get the ex. warranty and never use it but everyone that has come to my shop for warranty work has always left with a very solid machine and a big smile. And it only cost him $25. Even though we did $800 worth of repairs. If you see something on a quad that has an extended warranty, don't be affraid to get it to your dealer and do some complaining. They may not be able to get it repaired under warranty if it is not covered but if it is, it'll only cost you the deductable. The warranty is only as good as you let it be. If you don't mind some things being broke as long as you can still drive it. Then the warranty is no good. If you complain about every little thing you can, I bet the dealer will be able to find it and repair it no matter what it cost because you only have to pay $25.

Warrantee, you bet! I am confused as to the prices I often see here though? I don’t know if some how Polaris takes age, location or type of vehicle into consideration when quoting prices but I do know the dealer can lower that price! I am in Buffalo, NY and bought my 2000 Scrambler and 2001 Sportsman from a dealer called Pioneer Motorsports (they have a web site, Biggest dealership I have ever seen!). I only paid about $400 with tax for a 3 year 0 deductible for my Sportsman! I have to say there is a lot to break on it! I cant know for sure what the mark up is on the warrantees but Pioneer did not blink an eye at taking 25% off what Polaris had quoted me.

Hope this helps ……..

PS: By the way with 220 hours on my Sportsman the motor blew (oil failure). It cost me nothing for my new motor, total down time 10 days!

Mark

Pioneer is a nice store, I dealer trade with them. The prices on the extended warranty can be different for the simple fact the may use a different company. Polaris recommends one, but I would not purchase that one. The only warranty I would purchase is the one mentioned below, the were excellent.

Elroy,
I remember last year when I processed the warranties for us, we had one of your customers break down on the trail up here and he had us fix it. The warranty company you guys use is nice (if it is still the same). They didn't question us at all on what we did.

The company Polaris goes through denied a engine claim because it was the clutch seal that went. In the fine print it states anything that may be clutch related is a non-warranty issue. There are good and bad stories to everything, it is totally up to you, the owner. As far as myself no thanks.

I'm not saying that no one uses it. It's just that the odds are you won't. If the odds were that you will need it, then they couldn't make any money selling it.
