It's one of those quads that has to be modded, and gains the most from the mods.

Stock I found it had good power but no top end. The power was real low in the rpm range, and the gearing was way to low as well. Nothing a few hundred bucks doesn't change completely.
It rides real nice, graet braeks and can move through the tight stuff quicker than most.

As for drag racing, well it has a semi-auto clutch and dragging is it's worst trate. But the clutch is a good one, true lock up type, takes a while to learn how to use it thow.

Running against a 300EX, they are very close to watch but very different to ride. The lakota has 13.8 HP and the 300EX has 13.6 HP, but the honda is a good bit lighter. The lakota has a good bit more lower end than the honda, but the honda revs out much better. so all in all they are quite close.

The lakota was my first quad, my first four stroke and my first semi auto, so as you can see I had to learn alot quick. I MX and XC the lakota this past winter and it did very very well. Now In MX I would like to have had better shocks, but who wouldn't, for XC, I found it to be perfect for me.

I don't know what exactly I found that made me like the lakota so much, but can tell you it is a graet quad at a graet price and is reliable and easy to service..

Gaff I've been looking into the 322 kit also. If you don't mind me asking how much does it cost for the kit and cam and stuff. I can't wait to hear the results from yours.I'm going to race a 300ex as soon as i get my hub bearing it's a 97 and it all stock. I've rode it and it feals like the lakota has more low end than the 300. All i have is a supertrapp pipe with no disk.

Hay bigbad400,
I came one base gasket short from having it back together last week.
322 kit:...$275
cam:...$150
Boring and resleeving:...$140
Gasket set and carb jets:...$36

total:...$601

Remember you may want your head ported and polished (I did and heavily suggest you do) and add about $50 for oil and spark plugs and that.

I do all my own engines and don't know what labor would run, but to have some one do this for you without braeking it in or jetting it I would say about $1200 or so.

I'll let you know this thursday when I go home how it turns out. If it's any thing like my sons that we finished last week it should be awsome.
We put a powroll 94cc kit in his XR-80 with all the goodies and it flies!!!!!

My dad a mechanic he's rebuilt on cars, truck, tractors I will try to talk him in to doing it. If i buy the parts he probley will do it. What did you use to port and polish the head.Did you have to buy a oil cooler for it.I'm going to look for a job a little later today. All the money i get will be going toward the Lakota.

bigbad400,
The best way to go and buy the components a piece at a time. The parts are all special order and mickey makes them when you order them. So if you want the kit just send mickey the money and then as you get money for the cam, just send that. It takes a while to aquire every thing, but if you do it like that it all some how comes at the same time.
Take a good look at who you want to do the re-sleeving and boring for you, most are scared of the atv jugs. If you run into a snag for a machinest let me know, I have two of them up north that do graet jobs, and one of them does it the day he gets it and sends it back to you that same day.
I have all types of porting tools, can't begin to tell you what they are. I have a pattent that was made up that I went off of to do mine, If your dad doesn't feel comfortable I'll send you the pattent or referr you to my brother that has a full machine shop in ohio that probably cut you a deal. I also know a guy who does porting from aero space design programms that is very good, and has told me he would do lakota heads for $100.
Other than that the motor is simple to braek down and rebuilding is pretty straight forward, your dad won't have any problem with that.

The Lakota is a great entry level quad. Extremely dependable and durable. I had mine for a year and it never left me sit !! Maintenance is very simple to do also....oil filter, air filter, etc.
I really enjoyed the automatic clutch because my wife and son could operate it also. However, I out grew the machine and traded it on a raptor 660r last week and I love the raptor more than my wife !! Ha, Ha I recommend the machine and you should have years of fun to come with it.
