My brother-in-law is on his second Grizzly in a year and a half. The dealer finally traded his 1998 for a 1999 and gave him a good deal on it. After he had the 1999 for a few months, the motor went out in in it. It had to be rebuilt. We have a guy in our riding group that has one also. They spend more time in the shop than on the trail. Has anyone else encountered these problems with the Grizzly?

CLARIFICATION

Numerous people have in inquired on the precise nature of the problems of the brother-in-law's Grizzly. So here goes. The 1998's seals were bad around the belt and allowed water to seep in. Even in shallow water. The battery died after a few month's(no excess accessories other than the winch which was always ran with the motor running. The clutch that engages the belt broke. The belt broke later. Numerous times it would stall in mudholes.
1999 Grizzly(Currently with less than 300 miles on it). The motor started leaking oil. The wiring on the lights burnt up and had to be replaced. The motor had to be rebuilt(by dealer) and one month after the rebuild it started smoking like a chimney out of the tailpipe.

The other bud with the Grizzly has had the belt problems and stalling problems. The dealer ended up letting him trade it for a 2000 Kodiak.

Our group has every type of Yamaha made and none of them have experianced as much trouble as the Grizzlies.

I hope this clears things up. They may have just ended up with lemons and other Grizzlies are perfectly fine.

Labeling Grizzly "King of the Lemons," without describing the nature of your brother-in-law's problems with his machine, or the circumstances surrounding those problems, may defame the Grizzly. Besides a part-for-whole fallacy in your conclusion, your brother-in-law's case may be, ummmmm, "special."

Hudgin, how careful, generally, is your brother-in-law?

I mean, could you depend upon him to pull periodic maintenance on his Grizzly? Monitor oil level, adjust valves at proper intevals, etc.?

I ask, because, according to your later account, your brother-in-law wrecked both his Grizzly and your Wolverine by horseplay and careless inattention on the trail (backing up without looking), then ran over both quads the next morning with his truck, creating about $ 5,000 worth of damgage to all vehicles involved before he realized he'd hit anything.

Again, regarding your brother-in-law's judgment, surely he's aware Grizzly is "King of the Lemons;" why, then, did he trade his '98 Grizzly in on a '99 Grizzly? Unshakeable brand loyalist or glutton for punishment?

From these isolated incidents, one could label your brother-in-law, "King of . . .," however, such a conclusion would be unfair, without additional data and justification.

I'm wondering if your brother-in-law is a typical Grizzly owner and what conclusions might fairly be drawn about the Grizzly's reliability, durability, and service life from his experience.

I've had my Grizz for about 10 months.
I'm as hard on a bike as I can be. I love to ride hard and my Grizz has never givin me any trouble. After flipping it 15 times down a mountain, and runing it of into a 10ft gully she's still rock solid and never been in the shop.

He normally matains it very well. The belt gave him problems, the starter gave him problems, and the engine would cut out. The other guy that we rode with that had a Grizzly had the same type of problems. We are pretty loyal to the dealer becasue he treats us right on a lot of things. Excellent service.I was trying to say that the Grizzly was absolutely a piece of junk. Everyone that have had contact with has had problems including an uncle who doesn't even get it close to a mudhole.

I can't speak for all Grizzlies, but I've had my '99 for about a year, and so far, no problems.
I treat it pretty good, as I would any ATV that I would own. And I've had several different types and makes of ATV's. I can't say that one is any better than the other. I think it has a lot to do with how they are treated and how they are maintained.

A 98 with 1874 and it looks like she's gonna pull
a lot more.

Sorry about your problems, you should start
letter writting to Yamaha and keep writing
till you get a response, and hopefully
some Satisfaction.

Great ___
