Eh, I'd hate to raise hell here and I hope I don't get flamed.... But I know a guy who owns a 2001 Scrambler 500 4x4 (only mod is an aftermarket spark arrestor) and a stock Grizzly 660. He says the Scrambler, when space isn't limited, will actually beat the Grizzy in the long haul when they're raced. However, he's selling the Scrambler because it just can't eat mud or tackle the terrain like the Grizz. He likes mudding, and not fast paced trail riding. (PS - this is what he himself claims, I've never actually witnessed any of it, or tried it myself).

I wouldn't be so sure that the Griz would beat the Scrambler. I do know for a fact that the SP700 is faster than the Griz. Well, the other day I had to ride along with a SC500 to make sure that this guys TrailTech was accurate. I rode the SP700, just so I could beat him. The only mods on the SC500 were a White Bros. silencer and a bigger jet along with a K&N air filter. To my surprise I couldn't beat him. The only time I actually started to gain on him was after we hit the 50mph mark and even still I wasn't gaining very fast. If I would have been on a Griz he would have beaten me even worse.

Can a SC500 beat a Griz? I believe it could, if it couldn't, all you need is a few minor mods.

Funny how this story is playing out very differently here than in the Yamaha forum, where it's unanamously in favour of the Grizz.

I don't really have any expirience with either model, but based on power outputs and respective weights of the machines the Grizz should have a clear advantage.

I would "think" the same thing if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. I was really bummed that I couldn't beat that SC500 even on a SP700. That's alright, wait till I get done with my Xpress.

Can't say stock, but my 99 Scrambler with HPD pipe & clutch and K&N beat an 02 Grizzly. It was from a rolling start and they where real close until the Grizz topped out and the Scrambler kept climbing. The guy on the Grizz said at top end his speedo said 63. I was on my C-Dale so I didn't see much as I was out front (way out front) until I backed off about 1/2 way through 4th and let them pass.

Well it might be a closer race if you put some REAL tires on the Grizz.

My personal opinion here only. If I were to put my money on either of the bikes it would be the Scrambler 500. It isn't as top heavy as the Griz and I believe Griz is quite a bit heavier. I rode the Griz and the Scrambler just feels more sporty and responsive. I like to be able to hall *** on trails and still be able to have 4x4 for a little mud. My bet is on the scrambler for being an all around better choice. Now if you want to talk dependability....hate to say it but Jap bikes have it...sorry USA..but it is the truth..damn I hate to say that.
