Yamaha Dealers - Do They Know What They're Doing??
#1
I've had my 95 Wolverine at the dealer for 2.5 weeks for a bad miss (the engine almost completely stalls) at 3/4 to full throttle. They have yet to fiqure the problem out. It's not jetting, it's not spark (the sprak stays constant even when the motor misses), it's not the reverse switch, it's not valve adjustment, and it's not a lack of fuel. All of these things have been checked thoroughly by both me and then the dealer. The dealer thinks it's either electrical or something to do with the timing. He said he wouldn't know where to begin if it's electrical. He wanted to try a CDI box but doesn't want to order one in if it's not the problem. I would think Yamaha would take it back if the dealer is the one ordering it and using it as a diagnostic tool, but I guess not. As far as the timing, he said there is no way to check it. I find this hard to believe since there is a Top Dead Center mark inside the left crankcase. The dealer claims to have called Yamaha and that they don't return their calls. I have called Yamaha and they keep telling me that they can't do anything and to be patient. Well after 2.5 weeks, it's hard to be patient. I picked it up today because I got tired of waiting and getting the runaround. When I did, the service manager told me that my quad is a "f***ing piece of s**t". Great attitude. It may not be the best looking or the fastest, but it is still a relaible quad that suits my needs. I've asked around and from what I heard over the years, this dealer is supposed to be the best in the area. If this is the best, how much worse can the others be? What do you have to do to get your quad fixed by someone who is competent and courteous. Price doesn't matter one bit to me. I would gladly put $500 or more into it to have it fixed right in a timely fashion. Is this how Yamaha corporate handles all issues with their dealers and customers? It seems that both Yamaha and the dealers are just interested in selling new quads and are not concerned with after the sale service. Anyone know of a good quad mechanic in NE Pennsylvania? Sorry this is so long, but no one else will listen to me.

Well, I broke down and bought a service manual. Followed the electrical and carb. sections and checked everything. All was ok except that the float height for the carb. was 1/4" to high. I adjusted it, put it back on, and now it runs great. I can't believe that the dealer would overlook something as basic as this. If you want things done right, buy a service manual and do everything yourself. Boycott your Yamaha dealers service department!

The same day I got my Raptor I got the factory service manual. All work will be done by me unless it's warranty work.
My problem is the factory manual is vauge. Everyone needs to call Clymer & Haynes for a raptor manual. Mabey if they get enough calls we won't have to wait another 2 to 3 years for a good manual.
