does anybody have a solution for the strange gap between 1st and 2nd gear
on the 01 raptor
stock is 13/40
i have tried 12/40
and it almost makes the gap disappear along with making the quad more rideable at low speeds but...........it takes away so much on the top end
that the quad screams for another gear
12/37????
anybody?

Install the 2002 gear set. The parts are listed in another topic on this forum and cost around $450.

i spoke to my dealer and they said parts and labor will run around a grand
to install the 02 gears.
thats a pretty steep price to pay for a fix
its seems to me that there has to be an easier solution

This is the only "true" way to solve your problem. An exhaust slip-on(keep the smaller diameter headpipe), no lid airbox, more free flowing air filter, and a Dynojet kit is the next best mod to get over the big gap in the gears.

i already have pro-flo air box mod/no lid/rejet/full race ct exhaust/
10 3/4 to 1 je piston with mid grind cam
all of these mods make the gap seem less but its still there
sidewinder is saying 13/42 to split the difference, so to speak...
is anybody running this setup?

I have one of my Raptors set up with 13/42 and it is much better than the 12/40 for trail and track. It still does not have the top end of the 13/40 but with your mods you should. I use the other Raptor for for other fun with 12/40. Both of mine are pure stock with the exception of Uniflow air filters.

your 12/40 gearing gives you more top end than the 13/42?

No, you get more top end with the 13/42 than with the 12/40

I run Sidewinder sprockets and chain with a 13/42 sprocket ratio. It is pretty good but 2nd is still often too high and 1st is too low. I can't wind 1st gear out far enough so a shift is required to 2nd. As soon as that happens, it is time to slow down and I want the instant throttle that 1st can provide but isn't quite there if I leave it in 2nd.

I've learned to stay in 2nd and try to stay smoother. Ultimately, I outlast other riders. I always get the "man I can stay with you" but then nobody stays for the duration. Many people hang and are even faster for 2-3 laps than I am but their style is too jerky to sustain for 10-12 laps - not to mention the added wrecks and breakage they sustain.

All in all, the only change you are going to make is to correct the problem - fixing the gap Yamaha decided upon for the 2001 Raptors.
