http://www.powroll.com/tech_specs_raptor_tranny.htm

It shows the difference between a 3 dog 01 raptor tranny and a 4 dog 02 tranny..

and it has the complete parts list to do a conversion..

Just thought I'd share..

We bought a late 2001 Raptor, and considered waiting for a 2002. That would have ended up being a long wait, and many good rides would have been missed.
So maybe this is just the cost of those early rides. I think the first and second gear ratios suck, and reverse is ridiculously high. Those 2002 gears look way better, thanks for giving us that link. I think I could handle the overhaul, but I also heard of guys pulling the motor and letting a shop do just the motor for a bunch less dough. Maybe a good time to stick a webcam and a piston in or something too.

The motor pull is easy.. very easy if you ask me.. I can have one out in about an hour..

Over all I don't think it'd be a horrible job, I've done it twice on banshees to replace cranks or trans parts. The only thing harder on a raptor over a banshee would be getting the timing back together.

I am going to continue to ride my 01 for now... but if it cracks it's nice to know 02 gears work, and they aren't that high priced.

And I agree with fourlix, if you have it down that far, put a better piston and cam in it, while not why you're there.

thanks Brad...posts like this are what it's all about. I don't know why Yamaha continues to sweep this under the carpet. you don't need a degree in engineering to see the obvious design flaw. I'll start saving now...i'm sure the fuse has already benn lit on my tranny after a years worth of riding.

i wonder how many will experience problems in year two with the o1 tranny's? i think their were alot of lucky people who made it through year one without problems...

At $500 in parts, plus another $500 in labor to fix each of the 30,000 01 quads.. I can give you 30 million reason why yamaha is trying to push this under the carpet..

I think you are right. It is only a matter of time till every '01 Raptor tranny goes. Replacing the gears before they go would be cheaper than after bits have torn up the rest of the motor.

I emailed Powroll to see if the conversion works on all 2001. They said yes and that the part numbers for the cases have never changed. I guess that throws out the case part number rumor (Different cases for late 2001s). It is good to see all the research going on to allow th Raptor become even stronger. It may just be around for a while.

can you upgrade only the "bad" gears to '02 and leave the rest alone? or will it totally screw with the ratios? i haven't had any problems so far.
