After a ride last Saturday, my friend and I climbed a long steep hill. Everything went smooth except for some grinding noise coming from the belt under initial accelerations on the hill, and my 650 died 3 times coming back down the hill. It cranked right back up but would die again shortly after. Is something wrong with the carbs or does it have something to do with the floats? Does my belt need tightening? That is the only time I have heard it. It doesn't make the noise under wide open accelerations on hard packed surfaces.

Does it sound like the noise is coming from the motor on top of the belt housing or from the belt itself? Mine makes the noise from the little motor on top of the belt cover while I,m going up hill too. I don't hear it while on flat ground taking off either. It sounds like a buzzing/grinding noise. Still no idea what it is.

mudseeker,

I asked the same question about the clicking sound this is nyroc's answer:

Yes, that whirring is the electric brake actuator motor, and it moves every time you let off the gas, and when you turn the key on and off.

There is an electronic box that continually figures out how far to move the actuator in and out, since the drive pulley adjusts in and out with engine RPM. Every time you let off the gas the actuator has to sneak up to the pulley and push it together. It makes the engine speed up and compression slows you down.

It works great, but since you can hear it you wonder if something is wrong with it.

You are on the right track, if you are looking at getting tires. Since the stock ones stink, anything you get is better. The interesting thing about tires is figuring out which one is the right one for the trails you ride. People that have dirt devils really like em.

I don't have to tell you that you need more aggresive tires than devils if you ride a lot of mud.

I don't quite follow the the whole thing but the jist is that it's normal.

Crashryder,

Sorry can't help you.

It sounds like these guys have a problem with that grinding sound. I can't think of what it is, but I'm watchin to see what somebody figures out. A loose belt makes a squak? An out of adjustment shifter makes a grinding sound? Does that ring a bell?

It sounds more like a squak implying a loose belt. But why does this only happen on hills from a dead stop? When my 650 was new, I was actually rolling backwards down a hill and gassed it before stoppping completely. That was the first time I noticed this sound. Does that sound like a loose belt? Any ideas about it shutting off while going down the hill? Thanks for the help, guys.
