Something not quite right with my 650?
#1
Allright guys, I need some good advice!I'm startin' to think somethings a little off with my 650.
I'm not sure if it's putting out all the power it should be.I was out with the guys this weekend, one of 'em bought a new 700 Polaris.(I don't care what anyone says, it's a real nice machine)
Anyway, we decided to run a few drags, and the 700 took me off the line and led all the way.Roughly 1000 feet, slight downhill grade, gravel parking lot.He got me by about 1 bike length. We ran a couple times to make sure, same result every time. Now, I could live with that, but I also raced a 500 HO and could only beat it by about a bike length.
Also, I have a slight lazy spell going from idle to hard acceleration, top speed is only about 57 or 58 MPH and I always have to give it a touch of throttle when I start it up.
I'm wondering if it could possibly be the choke springs?Maybe I'm expecting too much but everyone talks as though the 650 should jump out ahead off the line and I was kinda dissapointed there.
Any input is welcome and appreciated.
Oh yeah, I was wondering if a K@N filter would work OK without rejetting.Or maybe it would be a waste without doing it?

It sounds like mine was till I changed the choke springs abd cable.
Talk to the guys at Freedom Cycle in Hlfx.
The top speed is about right.
On pavcement the best I can get out of mine is 103 km on the level.
I did the work myself not a big job.
They stock the parts --springs 3.00 approx --cable 39.99

Yeah you need to check for bad choke springs, and or fuel mixture settings. When is the last time you cleaned the air filter? Are you gettin all the old goo out before you let it dry and put more goo back on?
If you have taken off the airbox, check to make sure that the rubber shield is not blocking the end of the snorksnork.
Bearclaws are a lot heavier than dunflops, you lost alittle there. I probably lost more power than you with my heavizilla's.
I noticed a little bit of power loss when I put my storage box on (airdrag).
Ever hear coughing in the airbox, not when the engine is cold?
I'm guessing the new 700 you raced did not have the 150lbs of stuff you added yet either. The reason some of us are looking into airbox mods and filters and mufflers is cuz we miss the power we had before we put tires, box, winch, etc on the quad. n airbox mod will make you equal to that 700. Add a winch and bigger tires to that 700 and you will beat him again (he may already have the winch, but you have a little hesitation to fix).

to give you a comparison I am a BIG boy 300 lbs and my quad will run 62 all day even with the added weight of the tires, winch and drag of a tamarack box. No mods have been done to my quad. And sometimes i do get a cough when it is warm out of the front cylinder it will miss but that is one in few times I know mine runs rich by looking at the plugs but I plan on getting this fixed whn my K&N comes in.

Thanx guys, gonna pull the plugs tonite and go from there.Blew the airfilter out before the run on saturday, it wasn't dirty yet at all.

Kingmort, something has to be wrong with your machine, either clutching or carburetion. I have a winch on my quad, a rear seat box, I carry a small tool box, and pack around my 300 pound carcass!!! My buddy has a 700 and I beat him off the line every time. He gets me in the long run, but I eat him in a short run. He has no winch, no box, and he weighs around 230 pounds. There has to be a problem somewhere.

I think you are right, masterblaster. But what does "blew the aitfilter out" mean Kingmort?
If that's a stock filter you hafta wash, dry and re-goo. Pardon me if I misunderstood, but if you aren't caring for the filter properly, you may soon be slower than an LT50.
Maybe that is not the problem if you say it never was dirty.

Nyroc, I blew the airfilter out with compressed air ,opposite direction from normal airflow.I only had 700 KM's on it at the time and the filter looked clean anyway. That's why I just blew it out quick instead of washing and reoiling it.
Anyway, I got at it tonite and pulled the plugs. It was definately running rich ,plugs were black, the front was a little wosre than the back.I went into the carbs, pulled the choke cables out to have a look. The front wasn't pulling back quite all the way and the rear had a little black stuff on the plunger.I just stretched the springs a bit for now, lubed the cables and plungers with WD-40 and put it back together.I haven't put all the plastic back on but I did have it running in the shop.I think its better, there isn't any noticeable hesitation coming off idle once warmed up.Won't be able to tell for sure till tomorrow after work.
Thanks for everything so far guys.
