Curiously, how would (or does) the 350X compare in performance to today's offerings such as the 400EX, Banshee, Raptor, and others? Not so much in handling as in sheer power, acceleration and overall performance.

I am sort of interested in one that is for sale locally and I was just curious. I know it's down on displacement compared to the others, but it was quite a potent performer in its day.

Also, are they still quite reliable machines? Are parts readily available for them?

Parts are becoming harder to find, but are still available. (powroll.com and recreationunlimited.com for examples)

Powerwise, they are not quite as fast as a stock Raptor, but will hang right with, if not beat a stock 400EX in a drag or up a hill. More torque than a 400EX and a light front end makes for wheelies that are too easy, literally. (impossible to race a 350X on pavement, even if your sitting on the gas tank)

fun fun machines.
Check out my late 350X here, I sure miss it.

well I love my 350X, I am having an extended swing arm built for it right now. Anyways I think they are reliable as can be. I have two complete motors for them and a whole extra parts bike. I also have a 400ex. 350X is still a blast. If you want to see pictures go to Sand Dunes User Group

If you can turn the wrenches, and found one in good running order, I'd buy one. The will beat a 400ex, they will outrun a STOCK banshee on the topend, and would hang with a STOCK raptor.

I just sold my TRX 350x to my brother... it was a 1988 TRX 250x with a 1986 ATC 350x (12.5:1 Wiseco and head work) It went great but was a little under-suspended for the power and weight, and I just bought a 1988 TRX 350RX (1988 TRX 250R with a totally done out 350X motor) I am in the process of getting an aluminum tank welded up to fit over the top of the cylinder head and still fit inside the stock plastic... I saw it tonite in pieces and will have the gas cap flange machined tomorrow. As far as 350's go they are great. I buy any and all parts I can when they are around. I'm also in the process of rebuilding my old 1986 ATC 350X back to her glory days... Plastic is mint and the frame has been blasted.... just waiting for the cash and time to get the frame powder-coated. If you get a chance to try one, if you're anything like me you'll be hooked for life......

Good luck and "Keep the rubber side down"

I bought a new 350X in 1985, Ran it hard its was like a timex it will run for ever if you change the oil and filter on a regular basis. I sold it last week and bought a Raptor. If you can find a good one BUY IT !
