im by far no expert, but have been askin the same question. i knew this anyway but everyone ive talked to says the same thing. it is reliable but any time you modify an engine there is a chance for something to go wrong. the big bore kits can be a very welcome addition in the power dept.my main concern was the heat produced with the kit, but it seems it doesnt run much if any hotter than stock.
hope it helps.

If you want to do a 440 and you want to do it right be prepared to spend a good 2-2.5k. Maybe more depending on what you wanna do and how fast you wanna go. I looked into it but found that it was way out of my budget at the time. Do a 416 with a cam, port, pipe, carb, rockers and have it tuned right and you will be very pleased. 440s are the way to go but are expensive because you need to split the case and replace the rod to see the true potential and HP of the motor. I have seen a few well built 440s running high compressions and race gas smoke every banshee and raptor on the hills a few times. It is spendy though..

On the other hand............
You could just spend the 250$ on the IMS 440 kit like I did, another 100 to have the sleeve (included with the kit) installed, and have a much better running bike with tons more torque...
You should deff. have a good exhaust system and good air filter with no lid at the bare minimum though, to let it breathe. (sp?)
My 440 runs just a little quicker than a STOCK raptor.

Mine has been to glamis a few times since, and seems to run great and sounds tight.
Keep oil changed more frequently than when stock, to be on the safe side.
It is plenty quick up the hill too. (just race your own class, and not modded banshees or any Zilla)

My friend just got a 416 with full race cams and all that good stuff. Him and this kid on a stock cannondale speed raced. They ran dead even until they hit about fourth of fifth gear. He also raced a kid with a full race 440 with the same results.

There is no reason why a fully built 416 would out-run or even keep up with a fully built 440. (and dont give me the "416 revs faster" line, because if that was the case, the fully built stock bore 400 would smoke them both)
A fully built 416 would smoke my 300$ 440 kit, no doubt.
BUT, the 440's make lots and lots of torque.
Torque is what moves it in a dragrace.
Torque wins the hillshoot.
(this is in most cases, my Zilla would kill a built 440, but then again, the Zillas ARE in fact torque monsters)
