I WOULDNT GET AN NEW CARB UNLESS I PUT A 440KIT IN OR SOMETHING BECAUSE FOR THE PRICE IT JUST ISNT WORTH IT. IT MIGHT GIVE A LITTLE MORE HP BUT NOT AS MUCH IF YOU PUT HIGHER COMPRESSION PISTONS IN AND STUFF.

I have had an Edelbrock on the 400 for about a year now. My bike is only lightly moded (K&N, FMF header and pipe, and the Edelbrock). The increase in power is very noticeable!! It pulls strong in the mid range, and high end power is simply furious!! Actually, I lost a bit of low end when I put on the K&N (even with the stock carb!!). I was hoping to get it back with the Edelbrock, but it didn't help (so I can't blame the Edelbrock for that). I think I need to increase the compression to restore the low end (just to much air for a stock compression engine). The altitude compensation on the carb seems to be for real!!

If you are strictly a trail rider the carb is probably overkill, because you probably won't be able to efficiently use the high end power that you will gain.

Get a FCR 39 carb,,it's a pumper carb like a stock 400ex carb and works well with trail riding and racing...the edelbrock and lectrons are pretty much the same carbs and are used best with WOT riding like YZguy mentioned..

If you are willing to spend the time to properly dial in a carb, the FCR is the only way to go. As it was mentioned, the FCR has a acceletor pump. This will help with the dead spot when it is floored from idle. There is no other carb that is as adjustable, or that is as easily changed to Alky if the need arises. Check out FTZracing for prices.
