Who Wants to Go to Pismo this Summer-Fence Line Ride
#1
Well, it is getting too warm to go to Sand Mt. so it is time to plan a trip to Pismo to run the fence line.
I want to get at least 8 riders that want to ride the fence line hard.
A couple weekends that may work: June 22-23, July 13-14, July 27-28, August (any weekend at this point.)
Let me know if you want to go and what weekends work for you.
Riding the fence line at Pismo is more about the rider than the quad but the DS does great with the 4-stroke and the suspension over the whoops.
We could camp (RV) on the beach or stay in town. Don't really care if it is a family trip or a guys trip just as long as we get at least three good fence line runs in a day.

Sounds like fun. Not sure if we will be able to make it any of those weekends. Got a family trip to canada the last week of june and first week of july so the june. 22-23 is out. We can probably do it in august some time. How about we have a atvconnection get together up at the oregon dunes like july 25-30th? That place is AWESOME compared to pismo. Spinreel campground is nice and we can make online reservations for it(only $7 a night too). What do you all think? Sean

Things may be coming together for June 21-23.
Jet: We will have to look at a weekend in August for you to make it. Oregon may be possible. My buddy Dennis is trying to get me to make the trip over July 4th weekend.
We will look at later summer dates in the next few weeks.

Please tell me more about pismo. I might be going there the weekend of the 14th. Where is the best place to camp with easy access to the dunes. Will a 2 wheel drive Dodge 3/4 ton truck pulling a travel trailer make it to the camping areas? How crowded will pismo be this time of year? TIA

Others may be able to tell you more, I have only been a couple times and I have never camped on the beach.
Toughest thing about Pismo for camping is getting from the beach access to the 2-mile marker where you can unload and start riding. There is a small river / stream that comes feeds into the ocean. This must be crossed and depending on the tide it can be a small stream or a raging river. The first thing I would tell anyone is don't just go out there and cross. Let someone else cross and see how high the water is. If it looks pretty high, wait for someone else to cross and see how you like their line. Once you find a good line then cross.
I would probably not suggest a two wheel drive vehicle attempt this cross with an RV in tow. If you have a friend that has a 4X4 or you make friends easy (ask someone you meet out there with a 4X4 to help you) and have a tow rope/chain just hook up prior to crossing and the added pull should get you through.
Once past the river, the closer you are to the ocean the harder the sand. Only bad thing is once you get to where you want to camp you have to go inland where the sand is soft otherwise the tide will take your trailer to Hawaii when it comes in.
There are RV parks that are off the beach then you just have to get your quad to the beach. This may be the best option.
You may want to call ahead for camping reservations. I don't know how busy it is this time of year. They do limit the number of people they allow on the beach but, I have never had this be an issue. I would guess this is their busy time of the year since it is too hot for Glamis and there are a bunch of people from LA that probably want to go riding during the summer.
The dunes are fairly small and drop off as you head inland. If you like to race with a bunch of riders I suggest the fence line. A group of 8 riders can run the fence line and not get in eachothers way too much. If you have a Banshee with and extended swing-arm running on the juice and you are looking to race, Pismo is not the place to go. For you with your four-stroke you should have a great time.
Pismo is a great place for the family since it has the ocean where the kids can play. Don't expect real warm weather as Pismo is quite often fogged in and the ocean water is not too warm.
Let us know how your trip goes.

Everything sounds great TFTB. Except the part about crossing the river and having to go up into the sand to park. I will be going with my brother who does have a 4X4 truck. I will have 2 Raptors and possibly a LT80 and my family. Drag racing can be fun when you win, but thats not my objective of this trip. The cooler the weather, the better I like it.

Just beware, when Pismo gets cold, it gets wet cold. So beware the weather, and bring something that is warm you could wear riding if you needed it. If you get there on a sunny day, there is no better place to ride.

Went to pismo for the day yesterday, to check things out. The creek was but a trickle, the weather was cool. The sand was great. Stopped and parked just beyond marker #2. Was all I wanted to chance with my 2 wheel drive truck. There was a lot of people there but not a whole lot on the dunes. The dunes are a lot of fun. Made one run along the fence line to see what you guys are talking about. Rode through all the rest of the dunes as well. All in all a great place to go for summer rides here in California. There were a few people stuck and I saw enough to know that I will not take my trailer. Looks like a tent or sleep in the back of the truck next weekend. We crossed the creek at high tides both in and out. The creek is but a trickle right now, probably due to the lack of rainfall this year. This was only my 2nd trip to any dunes and I had a full set of paddles this time. Sand Sharks rears and Dunetracker fronts. What a big difference. In the V paddle vs Strait thread everyone said they didn't like the sharks. Carving up the little bowls and dunes here they worked great IMO. Some said they were good for that and they are. IMO. Thanks for the tips and information everyone.

Thanks for the report. My buddy and I were just talking about Pismo yesterday.
If you were crossing at high tide then we shouldn't have any problems.
We both have 4x4's but need to get more aggressive tires since we will be hauling the Weekend Warrior's. Those things are just big sand anchors.
I am more worried about the sand once we get off the beach to camp than anything. It gets soft real quick.
The V-paddles do pretty well on the sand at Pismo since it is so wet, heavy and coarse. The lighter sand that is not so packed is a different story with the V's.
