Slip on or full exhust? I know its been talked but what the final?
#2
If I were buying an exhaust today, I think it would be the new trinity pipe. I really like the look of it and they are not done with it yet, but it appears to be making nice power gains.
I prefer the full system to a slip on, but I think some have had real good luck with slip ons and I have never tried one, so I cant really comment.
I think the most popular pipes at the moment are the big gun and the ron wood.

I run the HMF slip on. They told me they have no plans on making the Head pipe becuse there really wasn't any way to make more power with one. Now I don't really beleive that but for now I really like it. Eventually I will go with a complete pipe kit. I am waiting to see what DMC comes out with. I wouldn't mind getting the Graydon or Ron Woods pipes but nobody realy offers a pipe with a spark arrester. You can get the HMF with a removable spark arrestor and a removable quiet core, the only thing that sucks is that you can't use them both at the same time. I tend to stay away from Supertrapp style pipes because disks are a huge pain in the %&@#!! to keep clean, and I don't think they really help worth a damn. HMF also comes in a lot of different colors and they are powdercoated, for the money and quality I think they make probably one of the top three slip-ons out there. I plan on selling mine maybe in a couple of months keep an eye out for it. good Luck

I don't believe there is any real gain with a full system over a slip-on for a STOCK motor. I say this because I went from a RWR full system to a yoshi slip-on and there is no power difference. If anything I may have a gained a slight bit with the Yoshi, probably because its muffler design. Not all slip-ons are gonna perform as well though, and I have nothing to offer about the rest.
However, in the event of serious internal mods, the full system would definitely be prefered.
I sure do like stainless over ceramic coatings that will fail over time - my RWR pipe was only on a year and there was internal rust, and rust inside all the collars, when I removed it.
Angry - RWR sells a Supertrapp adapter for their system, I used it with 18 disks for great low end power, as well as being legal at the dunes.

Not argueing but I have to agree with Angry. I DO NOT beleive that there is no gain from a full pipe. I have never seen a slip on equiped DS that even ran close to me. I really dont think there is any magic in my quad, I just beleive it is top notch add ons and taking the time to tune it right.

I dont have numbers but I can tell you the full pipe is lighter, has smoother bends, and the can is deffinatly way lighter.
I thought the woods pipe was a coated aluminum pipe? How did it rust? Mine is a year old and has no rust on it. Just curious or carifying I guess you could say.

I forget the actual terminology - aluminized ceramic, or something like that, very much like the Graydon and Big Gun pipe coatings. Mine looked great after a year, the rust I refer to was inside, and at all the slip together joints - at the headpipe collars, and the joint at the midpipe/tailpipe. The headpipe joints were the worst, because everytime the megaphone hit the swingarm jumping, the midpipe moves in and out of the headpipes causing erosion of the coating. I never knew any rust was occuring until I removed it. Don't get me wrong, I never expected the coated pipe to last as long as stainless, and it will definitely last longer than typical paint.
Since putting on the Yoshimura slip-on, I still run the same against everybody I'm used to racing, still beat the same people, still get beat by the same people the same amount. I can't speak for all slip-ons, only this one, and I have no actual Dyno numbers to compare with my old set-up vs. this one. I have to agree the RWR full system must put out more ponies than my slip-on due to the headpipe design, just not enough to make a real difference in my case. If Yoshi comes out with a headpipe for the DS, I'll get it, but more for looks than anything.
As far as weight, the Yoshi is extremely light, and very compact - a foot shorter than my RWR. No more worries of damage in flips.
Be advised - Yoshimura costumer service is worthless, and Denton racing didn't have anything to offer by way of tuning for this pipe either.

I was talking with the folks at Trinity today and the guy was looking at the DS dyno sheet with there new pipe- all their gains are in the low to mid range just like everyone else - no magic there- the construction is supposed to be top notch - this was for a stock bike- didn't get any info on a modified machine, however their dyno said that the ds only put out about 37hp peak!- I know Dynos are all different but sheess sounds like a lemon to me!
