Top speed of stock DS???
#2
I don't have any clue as to top speeds of the z. If i remember correctly from a dirt wheels comparison the ds and the raptor were pretty close at top speed bone stock. 74mph if i'm correct on both vehicles. Can't find my dirt wheels issue with the exact numbers. I personally was clocked at 73 by a best friends radar gun.

According to the March 2002 ATV Action HI-Performance Shootout, the Top Speed of the following 5 quads were checked at the El Mirage dry lake bed on a "windless" day with a GPS, all by the same rider with the following results:
Banshee- 77.7 mph
Raptor 660R- 76.9 mph
DS 650 Baja- 76.1 mph
Cannibal- 75.1 mph
400EX- 66.8 mph
Banshee- 77.7 mph
Raptor 660R- 76.9 mph
DS 650 Baja- 76.1 mph
Cannibal- 75.1 mph
400EX- 66.8 mph

GPS's are about as accurate as sundials for top speed measurments. A properly calibrated radar gun is the only method for reliable readings. That's why the CHP uses it instead of crytal *****, majic wands, or GPS.

The GPS is accurate with about 1 mph. We have tested it in the truck and it is within 1mph.

I've had the opportunity to do many top speed runs with a Garmin 315 GPS. Bone stock, the DS would consistantly top out hitting the rev limiter at 75.5 mph. That's with the 16/40 gearing and 20" tires. With 15/40 gearing and 22" razrs, I would again hit the rev limiter, but now about 77.5 mph. With the stock 16/40 gearing and 22" razrs, I hit a max of 82.6 mph. I did 20 runs with this set up one day, and 17 runs gave me over 80 mph. I weigh 170 lbs, and the majority of these runs were on a frozen lake with studded tires.
As for the Raptor, I can't tell you any GPS speeds, but the one 2002 Raptor I did race was way behind on top end. I do not have a clue about the Z400, but I am guessing it will be slightly behind the Raptor. Just as the saying goes, "There is no replacement for displacement."

TRXter, actually GPS is THE VERY MOST ACCURATE way to measure speed available to the average person. A consumer grade GPS is spec'd to be accurate to .1 MPH. There are instances where you can get erroneous readings but 99.99% of the time it is dead on accutrate. I'll explain why.
GPS uses a doppler shift calculation to measure spped. It DOES NOT measure speed using time vs distance like many people believe; this would be inaccurate and unreliable. The GPS satellite constellation is equipped with Cesium beam time standards to keep all of the sat signals "in sync" and also provides a timing reference for the GPS receiver. In short, the timing standard that the satellites AND the GPS receiver utilize is very accurate. As you move, the changes in the received frequency from the satellites (doppler) is measured and speed is derived. Since the GPS contains the ephemeris data for all of the satellites in orbit and receives signals from multiple satellites at once the speed calculates is both accurate and reliable; this is primarily due to the fact the GPS has up to 12 reference points to compare at once.
I can go deeper into this if you like but please, trust me on this - GPS is accurate, very accurtate. I agree that Radar is also very accurate but how many of us hav and carry radar guns out riding???
