Since I've had my Raptor I've noticed a few times when you would go to start her up she would let out a loud "THUNK". I dismissed this as being the starter catching the big 660engine on compression stroke (and also a freind of mine bought one at the same time and his would do it also), but now that I've had her a few months and done some fairly rough riding the "THUNK" is heard much more often (my friends still only does it occasionally). Is this noise something common on the Raptor or do I have a bum starter?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!!!!

Sounds like the one way starter gear is going out. Does the starter turn fast then seem to slam in? I would have my dealer check it out. THis is very common.....sort of like adding fuel.

Thanks for the info. will probably try to take it back out to they yammywacker shop and see what they have to say about it.

By the way I hate to hear about your trans. that Sucks. I had a guy the other day asking if I had any problems with my trans. I told him that they fixed it on the 02's and that it wasn't that big of a problem on the 01's LOL as I read more on these forums I realize how big of a problem this really is. I find it hard to beleive that Yamaha hasn't took steps to fix this issue.

Anyway thanks again for the info. at least now I can talk half sensible to the shop about what the problem may be.
