The turf tamers are only a two ply tire. They are better suited for motocross use. The chevrons are a good all around trail tire that are pretty tough. Have you considered any other tires like the itp holeshot xc's? If I had to pick the best desert tire out of the two you listed, i would take the chevrons.

I am looking more at the Razr Rear by MAXXIS. Its a 6 ply tire. 20x11x9 tire. RockyMountainatv.com has them.
I have also heard of people loosing power by switching tires, how do I avoid this? I assume you keep the same highth tire???

Heavy tires will make you loose power because it is harder to spin them. Normally 6 ply tires are very heavy but depending on where you ride, sometimes you need 6 ply. I run 2 ply holesot MX with no problems.

What type of conditions would you run 6 ply? Doesn't 6 ply help prevent punctures?

6 ply tire are very puncture and cut resistent. I would say rock crawling and fast desert riding would be situation where you would use something like this. You might be able to get away with a 4 or even a 2 ply on your atc 250r because they weight alot less than the average quads and you probably will not go as fast through rough rocky terrain as a quad. In the 80s Factory teams would race atc250r in desert races such as the baja 500 and 1000 using dunlop big ballon tires that I think where 1 or 2 ply, and they did OK. Are you near Palm Springs?

Actually, the other way. The high desert. Apple Valley/Lucerne Valley. So stick with 6 ply? What are the pro's and con's?

If I where you I would go with a 4 ply, Like I say your bike is lighter and will not hit the rough stuff and fast as a quad. You will save a little on the weight, which is a welcome thing in terms of power and handling.
