Florida rider beware

I just go poped on this today and didn't even know about it. The cop wanted to arrest me. It seams as though there is a new law regarding atv needing to be registered in the state of Florida as of 7/01/2002.

Read this link

And this one.

The cop how stoped me told me they are illegal to ride because they are too dangerous and set everything on fire (brush). Can you believe this. I am called that police dept tomorrow to get their angle.

I understand the registration is to be used new riding areas to be proposed on 1/30/2003 and will be open by 2005. In the mean time I think they want us to pay for nothing. The closest riding area (legal) is 300 hundered miles away! Why should I have to pay registration for something that might happen 2 years from now, while in the mean time I am being threatened with arrest if I ride my machine ANYWHERE in south florida.

Hey read your speeks regarding the definition of an at atv. then you should buy a ds650 its 52"wide meaning it is not classified as an atv and is not required to register it.problem solved ride hard and enjoy your self.

Those are not my spec, that is the State of Fl specs. But you have a good idea, I could just get some wheel spacers and I would be fine.

Hello,

Did you get a title for your ATV? This is the first I've heard of it. I ride at Croom in Brooksville weekly. They never mentioned it. I read through the Official Florida stuff you linked to and noticed this:

"NOTE: Off-highway vehicles will NOT be issued a license plate or decal."

How will they know if it has been registered?

and this,

"Any off-highway vehicle purchased by a Florida resident, prior to July 1, 2002, that is operated on unrestricted public lands of this state."

Funny how the rangers at Croom never ask about.

Thanks,

the law was passed on 7/1/02
the stickers will not be available(according to tallahassee)until 10/02 and the law will not be enforced until they are available...
the police officer has been grossly misinformed and should be reported, imo
this law shouldnt affect you if you ride only on private land...

I like riding at Croom, it's a lot of fun. There are a lot of whoopdedoos on the main trails, which can get annoying, but there are a vast number of good trails off of the main ones that are flat. The 1st day use area has a large pit that can be fun depening on the conditions. If there has been a lot of rain, and a lot of motorcycles riding there, a large number of ruts form that make it a pain on an ATV. But if it gets too dry, then it turns into a big dust bowl. Either way, it's fun. There's good trails to the west of the pit without whoopdedoos.

Here a pic of the pit I took last May.

If you like challenging riding, try out the area just south of the 2nd day use area. There are a ton of hills that twist all around through the woods. Be very carefull there though. It can be easy to get lost and a number of the trails have very large drop offs. If you fell off, broken bones would result for sure. The 2nd day use area also have a number of mini pits of figure eights that are fun, too.

So go up there and check it out. It's very hard to find any information about Croom on the web. The Withlacoochee State Forest website is just cluttered full of useless links. But here it is, maybe you can dig through it and find more info about Croom. www.fl-dof.com/state_forests/Withlacoochee.htm. But I guess, with a URL like that, what can we expect? Someday I'll make a website that will have pics and useful info about Croom.

Oh yeah, and check out this site's videos,

The Banshee Kid http://www.thebansheekid.com/main/videos.htm

A lot of the video shot there was shot at Croom. If you see massive hill climbing, I think that was shot south of the 2nd day use area I talked about.

For anyone in south Florida looking for a place to ride...There is a place in Port Saint Lucie, right off of Gatlin Blvd., and The Kissimee Prarrie Reserve about 15 miles north of Okeechobee? If anyone is interested let me know and I can give you directions.
