Is it a bad Idea to run my 250x without a muffler for a little while? The reason I'm doing it is because it is loud as hell and I like it like that. So is it a bad Idea?

You could cause engine damage to run without a muffler and there is no back pressure so it will decrease your power.

To expand a little on the other post, a certain amount of back pressure is necessary to allow the valves to operate properly. In addition to that the obvious other reason not to do it is the fact that anti-ohv people love to use you as a classic example of why ohv's should be banned. According to some reports I've seen, S. Carolina has the largest per capita ownership of ATVs in the U.S.That alone should cause you to project a positive image.

There is a major difference in being loud and annoying and being loud and sounding good. My 68 truck is one of the loudest vehicles around (521 BB stroker with dual 3.5" exhaust), but it sounds good with a low rumble. The backfiring of no muffler sounds like crap and is very annoying. I feel sorry for anyone around you. As for damage to the engine, as long as you are using a full head pipe, you shouldn't have any problems. Power will be decreased.

Do yourself and everyone around you a favor and buy a suppertrapp system. Rittercycle sells a 3" that is about the loudest you can get. It will sound good and not be near as annoying.

Hey Alky is that truck a Ford. I've got some friends that race at Siketon with Ford trucks that you might know. They are the Hartlines. keith used to race a bad quadzilla several years ago at Sikeston that ran low 8s in the 1/8.

I've got the 3" that ritter cycle sells. Powroll makes it. It's not really that loud but it sounds sooo cool. At my last race out of all 250R's and 400EX's I had the quietest quad there. My friend said he couldnt even hear me going around the track with the other quads. It's kinda loud when you're up close but when you get away it really fades. I gotta say my friends Yoshi Raptor is tons louder.

If you decide to do this, gut your stock muffler and leave it connected to the headpipe!!!

Running a head pipe alone will cause damage to the head and burn the exhaust valve.

The culprit is heat transfer. True.....the exhaust will exit faster, BUT it will still be the same temprature when it leaves the pipe. this causes the header pipe to take ALL the exhaust heat. You will no longer have the muffler to help distribute that heat.
When it gets your exhaust valve, you will never see it coming. One minute your soaring, and the next minute you find yourself kissing the front bumper and a good slick spot on the rear tires.

If you insist on making it loud by using the stock exhaust, keep the muffler on there and just gut it.

Did you do know that Cobra makes a COMPLETE exhaust system for under $100.00 for your quad that includes a larger head pipe?? It doesn't make as much power as some ofthe other pipes out there, but it will give you the sound you are looking for and without as much backfiring.

Zookyrider, Yeah, I know of the Hartleins. That ol' red truck will fly. I have never got the chance to talk to them though.
