i have been thinking about building myself a race quad instead of buying one. i figure that i can use a honda 250r frame and a honda cbr engine but what cc size engine would be best i would like to be able to go over a 100mph. i was thinking a dbr 600 engine but what do you guys think.

thanks

i saw on the net a couple days ago where this guy took a 250r frame and put a 1980's cb1 400 engine in it and it would go 80+ mph

Most streetbike have overhead cams, on top of long stroke cylinders. This makes for a tall engine. There is a couple of guys that TT race with me that have the old 750 hondas, but the cut up their frames or custom built one. I have a friend that open class races a XL500 honda with a big bore, in a ATV chassis. You will never be able to ride or race a CBR motor in an atv frame, other than drag. If you use a CBR engine, try a F-2 (good luck finding one, thats what the mini sprints run). They were in the late 80's early 90's CBR's. F-3 shortened the stroke, and F-4 even shorter.

Good luck with your project!

I would sell my 600 Katana cheap! Its air cooled, don't need a radiator. $750

the internet site i went to said they rode theres on trails all the time. they said thats mainly what they did.
so could you please explain i don't want to start building it if i know i will regret it when i am done.

thanks

I was thinking in terms of power, size, and weight. The power that the 600cc sport bikes make is overwhelming. No built Raptor on pump gas, or probably any of them off the bottle, will ever be able to touch one of these stock motors in a drag race. The 89 CBR600 that I had would power the front tire up in second gear (at least 35mph) in stock form.

Remember, this is a 4 cylinder inline engine. Most of them are probably 22-24" wide. In a motorcycle, you sit behind the engine. In an atv, you sit over it. The guy that races the CB750 has a major problem moving around on his bike due to the fact he can't move up on the seat.

There is a lot more material in one of these engines than in most ATV engines. They weigh over twice the weight of most atv engines. I would never consider jumping it. Your "sprung" weight will be greater, so you will need a different shock setup.

I have seen pictures of many GSX engines in drag atvs. The 1000-1300cc can easily put out 300hp fully built with turbos.

I enjoy these wild conversions. I am slowly still trying to put a YZ490 engine in a blaster frame. I have in the past put a virago 1000cc v-twin engine in a YFM225 frame. I am starting to think how cool my CB650 engine would be in a 200s three wheeler frame (wideness is my biggest concern).

I hope it works for you.

Actually there are people that build these bikes. In the last atv action there was a quad with a 2002 cbr motor. It was setup for MX and everything. They said that they are very trail ridable and that they can reach speeds of 130mph on the highway. I don't think the power would be overwhelming as it is a fourstroke but anyone that has ridden these bikes knows that they really come alive around 7-8000 RPM. The quad in the mag weighed in at around 450lbs. which is still lighter than a DS i think.

I don't think it would be worth the trouble to go any smaller than 1000cc...
but that's just my opinion. (What do I know? I'm just a horsepower ****)

okay i know what you mean now.
i will probably buy a ds or rapter (since i like to jump) and then once i get enough cash i will start that project cause i would really like to do somthing like that.
i know width and weight are my biggest concern also.

It would just be too heavy for MX. You could putt around on trails but for jumping and cornering it would just be a brick. A better solution would be to stuff a CR500 engine into a 250r frame. Now you are talking.

would a honda 600 sport bike engine by enough to get a fourwheeler over 100mph. at first i didn't think so because they have less CC's than the raptor and bomb but i guess they got gobbs more hp like 100 or somthing right???

thanks

have you seen the the new atv action magizine with the honda 600EXi and they said they jumped that.
