Big ride in the Upper Pen. of Michigan (Aug 16th!)
#1
Here it goes......
I will be organizing a ride here in the UP for anyone who is interested. The trip will consist of about 80+ miles. The trail conditions contain: Mud, muck, fast-track, rocky, technical, one monster hill, river crossings, sand, pits, and a all out good time.
As it stands, i am hoping to have about 20 or so riders. ALL are welcome (even da trolls, EH!).
Please respond to this post with your email so that i can give you directions to the starting points. Also, there are hotels that are reasonable in the area, as well as, food, gas, and entertainment. For those that are interested, i can have either Kareoke or a band at the family bar. For those that are interested and of "age" hehe, FIRST DRINK WILL BE ON ME!

The closest town is Marquette MI. We will be leaving either from Ishpeming or Champion. Depending on how many there are and where everyone is lodging. The ride will be to the town of Big Bay and back. The trip will consist of two different trail systems so you wont see the same thing twice! hehe There are recreational/scenic areas along the way. Waterfalls and great views for a break and picture are along the way.
The nice thing about this trip is, it will be for the experienced as well as the novice. You can choose your routes when the riding gets rough. The trail system that we will be taking has alternate routes for those who dont want to winch it

Do you need any special licence or off road permit to ride in Michigan?
Is it public land or private trail system?
My machine is licenced (for Ontario) and insured.

I can answer only to what I know. As a MI resident you need an ORV sticker, that costs ~$16.25. I have no idea how MI views a Canadian resident's machine, my guess is that you will only need to buy the very same sticker. I also don't know the exact trail system Jonathon is planning to take, but just about all trails in the UP are publicly accessible.

Make sure you get directions to Big Bay from Marquette. Finding (is it 520??) can be a pain in the ****...
Anyway, I have a funny story about some Canadians I met up north...
I see these 6 or 7 guys blazing down a (paved) road, with no helmets on... So me being curious, I flag them down to talk to them. I ask them if they're nuts, cause one, it's illegal to ride down a main road, and two they're not wearing helmets. They tell me they're from Canada, and this is legal there. I told them that it was not here, and the DNR (or cops) would definitely bust them. They all pointed to their license plates on the back of their machines, said not to worry cause they were legal, and drove off laughing.
I still wonder what ever happened to those guys....

We will be riding private and public land both. You will be able to get a sticker for 16.25 no matter what your residence is.
Dont worry about finding out how to get to Big Bay. We will be leaving from Ishpeming or Champion and both are right on US41. Easy to find (use yahoo maps or such for directions from your location).
I can email you hotels that are in the area if you are interested. They range from somewhat pricy to really cheap.
