I just bought an '85 Honda TRX250. This may be a dumb question now that I own it, but did I make a good choice?

It's our first machine, and we'll use it to poke along on the dirt trails and just have fun. We've got kids from age 4 to 12. Eventually, as finances permit, we'll get a second machine.

This one seems to fit the bill just fine, especially it's $1800 price, and it came with a snowplow which makes me and my 12 year old son happy.

The previous owner kept it in very good condition - no frame rust except in a few places underneath, the plastic is clean, flexible not cracked and not chalking anywhere.

Any comments on the purchase? Any suggestions, mods, tips or tricks that I ought to be aware of?

Verry nice,That is the four-stroke right?Taken care of that thing should last forever.

You might want to get some tire chains for the snow.

 

Not a bad choice 4 strokes run for ever. Just get the valve clearence adjusted. Because u dont know when the last time it was done. If not riing on the bike with ba clearence can burn the valves an valve guides which will cost a decent dollar to repair

Thanks, guys. Yes, this one is a 4-stroke. I've read about the valve clearance adjustment and I'll check it.

Is the automatice clutch going to give me any trouble? I see in the owners manual how it can be adjusted, but can/will it wear out? How do they work - like a centrifugal clutch in my 1971 vintage mini-bike? I'm so used to the manual clutch in my Yamaha 250 dirt bike and my Jeep that I'm a little skeptical of an "automatic clutch", but they seem to be used in a lot of four-wheelers these days.

the clutch acts as the same principle as your MINI bike clutch.. but I am not sure how the actual set up is.. and it's a "wet" clutch pack not dry.
I have yet to see one wear out, but everything does someday when used.
Your choice sounds good.. and you should have many years of fun riding. one rule of thumb is to change the oil every 5th tank of gas.

Everything on that four stroke wil last forever even if it runs for a month with no engine oil (lets not go into details).
