Hopefully someone thats been inside the Raptor can shed some light on this little hurdle I am sort-of stumped on. Anyway, I have proper operation of the gears / shift forks / and drum. My problem is I can't get proper shifting after installing the shift shaft and it's components.....I am using a maintenance manual.....is there something I am missing here? THanks for the time.

Gary - I SWEAR THAT I HAVE THE SAME EXACT THING GOING ON!!!!!!!!!!! WTF?!?

It has been a struggle for my mechanic to figure that out too, seems like. I can tell ya now, SWYTAK has an idea that might can help ya out! He can explan it waaay better than I can. But because you are looking for an answer, (and if you were like me) I would take any advice given.... So I am going to give you the short version of what he told me: Pull the clutch cover, get ahold of the shift shaft, and while slightly jiggling the shifter - and the end (the clutch cover side) of the shift shaft; try to work it in (away from you). There is a certain position that it needs to meet.

Other than that???? Sorry! Maybe ask Swy.

I picked mine back up from my mechanic (friend) this morning as a matter of a fact! He worked on it again last night by taking all the innards out, inspecting them, and replacing them back. He was mindful to do the 'above' with the shift shaft. It seems to not be having the "shifting problems" that I had before, But still seems a little notchy feeling (maybe a little "sloppy&quot to me. But I now do not (at this point in the day) have the problems getting it from gear to gear.

I will be going on that Haspin ride (mentioned in another thread) Wednesday next week. I guess that will now be it's true test. Of course day to day here around the house, I will ride it more and see how she does.... that's all I can do right now.

Please let me/us know how it DOES turn out for you. I would like to know if yours feel notchy in any way.

Good luck man!!!

Hmmmmm...interesting. Did your mechanic say what finally seemingly fixed yours so the shifting was correct? I pm'ed Swy......hopefully he will chime in when he finds an opportunity. Thanks for the reply.

Gary I would have to say no, he is not sure what he may have done. Like I say, he just went through it all again, put it back together, and so far no "probs", although it still seems a little "rough" to me.

He did seem a little surprised when I mentioned to him about the shift shaft alignment. So I wonder if he just didn't pay very close attention to it the first time when he re-assembled the motor, but was "mindful" of it this time, and maybe that WAS it after all?! I dunno.

Gary,

What type of "improper shifting" are you experiencing? Can you run through the gears? Down shift and up shift? Please explain in more detail and I will see if I can help. I am no expert mind you, but have been through the trans on a couple of occassions.

I got the case back together and all seemed fine (gears working / meshing smoothly before and after case was assembled). I start assembling the clutch basket side, install the segment and segment bolt (the round notched item that bolts on the end of the shift drum). Now I install the shift guide and shift lever (shift lever is the “hook type piece” that the shift guide sits in)…..and these items slip into the segment. One thing noteworthy is the assembly of the paws, paw pins, and springs into the shift lever……I used the illustration in the maintenance manual and placed the rounded side in with the squared edge facing out towards the segment. Next, I install the stopped lever (a “wheeled” arm that sits on the top of the segment) and install the stopper spring. Next, I install the shift shaft…..making sure the left side has the spring stops on the outside of the shaft and the right side is riding on the shift lever arm (that has a bushing on it). Next, I install the shifter and proceed too see if the tranny is shifting properly through the gears (while looking at the function). This is where I realize I have a problem. The shift lever (again, it rotates inside the segment) seems to be working incorrect (binding?)……I take the assembly apart and install once again…..the shift lever seems too be working correct….I find neutral and start too shift back up through the gears…..then it seems too bind once again. I tried to give plenty of detail……may have made things more confusing. Anyway….that’s where I am at……what do you think? Thanks for any response.

Check your pm, I think it will be easier to speak over the phone. You can then post the info for everyone to read after the fact.

Jim advised that the side case actually holds the shift shaft in proper position (if the shaft was correct BEFORE installation of the side case).......SO, since prior arrangements held me from tinkering with my toys yesterday eve, I will be digging in this evening. I will update afterwards. Thanks for the time Jim (Swy).
TOID, tell me more about your set-up (almost identical too mine).....whats your plug look like now with the DJ 155-160 mains? WHat are your needles set at? Does your engine crank over freely?
On another note.....I suppose I will have too find my old woodruff key......probably too much cylinder pressure with the 10.75/1 JE and the advanced timing key since I would rather use pump gas (if possible...but if higher quality fuel is necessary, I will definately go that route). Later guys.
