I have a 250EX for my teenage girls and they like it. Compared to the 300EX I would consider the following:
Autoclutch
Low maintenance shaft drive
Tighter turning
More clearance
More fuel
Easy to engage reverse
Some of these are very minor points, but in my opinion it's a great bike for casual riders. That describes everyone that rides mine, except for me.
To be honest, if I had it to do over I would probably buy the Recon. The novelty of getting wet or muddy all the time wears off. Might be more the case with some ladies. But I think the 250EX looks nice.
Good Luck

Onlyhondas,
good point on the fender protection, with the new Recons sharing the motor mods of the 250ex,you will get the power and a lot more protection. My son was real surprised the first trail ride with his ex,the puddles he zipped throught with his old Recon got him soaked on the sport fendered ex.

The 300 has REAL SPORT QUAD SUSPENSION, where the 250 has kind of warmed over utility suspension. Just go push on the bikes and the difference is very obvious!!! The 250 suspension is tight and rebounds very fast. The 250 is an intermediate bike for beginners and kids, and if she already knows how to use a manual clutch she is way better off on the 300. Around here, 300's (new) are going for the same price as a 250!!
No matter which one you get, I would change out the balooney stock tires first thing. This is particularly true of the 250, which pushes a little in turns and is a little tippy. Get some type of square profile tire like Holeshots.
