check out the thread: Friend Bought 400ex, best mods for the buck. I like what sduncan said to do. Total cost is under $50. I am gonna see if my friend wants to do it to his 400ex. We'll use my unused stock pipe. The post is on the 2nd page. Check it out. If we do it I'll let you know how it goes.

for starters i dont have a welder. and the stock muffler does'nt look as good as the after market ones. hole saws in that size i've got. with the ids2 or white bros one can increase horsepower by adding discs or increase torque by removeing them. also what if you don't like the sound or its two loud for where you ride you've done this work for nothing. also if you've heard the 400 with out the spark arrester you'd know this is where most of the restrictions are.

Spend the extra $50 and get the White Bros pipe. It's been proven too be the best available for the 400ex.

What about the FMF Powercore IV? My friend has put this pipe on his EX. Sounds great. Seems to have provided very nice low and mid range grunt when compared to the stock pipe. However, I have never ridden another EX so I have nothing to compare it to.

Vlucdog,
Didn't that firefighter buddy of yours, that Jerry came with that time, have the same pipe as I mentioned above? Did you ever get to ride that EX? Yeah, you remember, the one my LAKOTA had to TOW back to the truck!
