The Z400 is quite a bit faster in a 300'run. I have never seen the two race past that but I would venture a guess the Z would be on top. As far as reliabilitys concerned, the Z is too new to compare.

You wont beat the reliability of the 400EX.

Well I have a little bit of firsthand knowledge of the Suzuki Z engines. I have done quite a few jobs with these since they first came out in the bike. Coatings free up plenty of hidden power in these engines. They are also more reliable than the XR400 engines, therefore making the Z400 more reliable than the 400EX when you look at it in that perspective.
Just my opinion.

I have both quads but the Z is quicker and faster but the 400 stays right there. But i would say the 400ex is more reliable becasue i no people are complaning about the Z already

the reason people are complaning about the z-400 is because it is a first year model and still has bugs to be worked out. any first year model wont be perfect.

The Z's motor is tried and true and can be a 50+ pony screamer. It's the axle that is giving SOME people issues. Other than that, weak tie rods, big deal, and some have bent steering stems on hits with trees. I live in a 2 Z household, and I beat the crap'ola outta mine jumping everything in sight, not all pretty landings either, with no problems yet. I've even tagged stumps with the rear tire and my axle holds every time. We also got our Z's the day they were released. The ex is a great machine, don't get me wrong, but the Z just has the edge over it in a few departments right now. And dollar for dollar, the Z takes better to motor mods. Both are good quads in my opinion, but I was in the market to buy a new quad, so the Z was definitely the better choice. If I didn't have the funds and had to choose a used quad, well the ex would be a great choice, I mean their prices have been falling ever since the Z's release and there's of course a ton of parts out there for the ex. But, give the Z time, it's got a good amount already, give it another year, it will have just as many considering it's brother quad KFX is the same base quad which should also drive the price of parts down.

The Z is definately faster that the 400ex. I have raced my buddies 400ex many times and only lost once because my front end shot straight up in the air. mind you, I almost caught up to him at the end of about 300yds.

As far as reliability goes, I have had no problems with my Z (knock on wood). But only time will tell on that.
