Want to buy a quad
#1
I'm wanting to buy my first quad. I am 5'9" and weigh 200lbs. I'm looking for a good trail/open area quad. I've kinda narrowed it down to the Z400, 400EX, Banshee and even the Warrior. I found a Z400 for $5199 and will call tomorrow on the others. The Warriors "list" price is what attracted me to it(I'm sure I can get it alot cheaper). Do you think it has enough power and is big enough for my weight and height? I'd like to spend around $5300 tops, but a $4000 quad would be even better. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Mike.

Any quad is better than no quad. You might be dispointed later down the road if you purchase a Warrior. They're a good quad, just been around for a long time with no updates. Just make sure whatever you buy is what you are wanting to ride for years to come. BTW for your size a warrior will have plenty of power. Later

Ok, scratch the Warrior. I'm going to call the Honda dealer tomorrow to see if they are discounting the price. The Banshee is questionable being it's a two-stroke. I won't mind working on it, but it seems that the four-strokes would be less trouble.

I am thinking about buying a used 2002 400ex myself. There are a lot of them around with almost no miles and you can pick one up for around 4K. You are looking at 5200 min for a Z and I don't think it's worth the xtra 1200 bucks.

<< dont get a two stroke!!!!!!! they are gonna outlaw them soon!!! get a ex >>
regarless of proposed laws, you will still be able to use 2 strokes. manufacturers just cant make them.

also, 2 strokes arent really any more maintenance then four strokes. instead of changing oil, you just mix it. two strokes are somewhat more tempermental in cold weather, however.
if you can find a used 400ex for cheap, you might be better off than with a new z400, just for financial sake. if the difference isnt too much, id go with the z400. it has reverse, a liquid cooled engine, and more hp stock than the 400ex. as far as axle problems, they are somewhat rare and have been completely taken care of by the thicker axles that have been put on the quads by the manufacturer.
stock, the shee is faster than all of them. it also has the greatest potential with mods.
anyway you go, you will get a reliable quad that is fun to ride. that in mind, happy hunting

Thanks for the info Maddog56. I had narrowed it down to the Z400, but then I brought my wife to look at one. She notices a Raptor and starts liking it. It was kind of funny because she didn't flinch at the price. So now it's down to the Z400 or the Raptor. I'm still leaning towards the Z.

let me try to help you here then. the question here is what do you want to do. for the trails both quads are great and have plenty of speed, power, and handling ability to make anybody happy. both have reverse and are liquid cooled. they even come with the same radial tires.
the differences arise in two situations. if you are looking to do some mx riding, including major jumps and really tight corners at speed, then the z may be better for you. its lower than the raptor and that makes it seem more stable when you are really pushing it or are trying to pitch the bike on a jump.
if you are looking to beat your buddies in a race or a hill climb, the raptor is the hands down winner. the z will walk a 400 ex and everything south of that, but it will not beat a stock raptor, even with a pipe. the raptor will run with and beat stock ds650s and banshees. it will even take 250r's and shees with basic mods like pipes and the like.
either way you will end up with a really good machine. the z comes in yellow and white. green and orange if you pick a kawasaki. the 03 raptors come in blue, limited edition all black, and, my favorite, the awesome black and red. its the color i have and it looks sweet. not many people have that color either, at least not yet.

Why do you want to buy an ATV? That is just plain stupid. the rest of these guys are hiding the truthand that truth is plain and simple......
They are pricey items that can often get you to spend a restless night on the couch. Not to mention your wife/girlfriend(s) will think she is obligated to the same amount of cash to spend on whatever they want. You'll want to skip a couple of days of work just to ride....This is very problematic when the boss calls the wife/girlfriend(s) to ask for your whereabouts. You'll be late for dinner because you discovered a little unknown trail that takes you an extra 2 hours to find your way back. You will ruin some of your nice clothing with all that icky mud and dust. Your insurance premiums will go up due to the little mishaps you have along the way. Your lawn will remain unmowed, your gardens will be overgrown with weeds due to that one weekend trip. That weekend trip was also costly because you begged your wife/girfriend{s} that IF you could go you would not ask for "nookie" for an entire week. I tell ya..... turn away and run. run far away......

I'm sorry that you feel that way dash. And don't ever call me stupid. My wife and I will spend "our" money on whatever we want. Obviously, you married the wrong girl. Why don't you get a divorce and move back in with your parents? Have a nice life!!!
