The 400 is think is faster but its a 2 stroke, so it has alot of potential power there. The 500 will last longer and resale will be higher but the potential power is not there like the 400. If you like 2 strokes get the 400. I drove a 400 Xplorer once for like 5 minutes and it was pretty powerful, I was young at the time so I don't know how it would feel now though.

It all depends on what you want. You will get way more hp out of the 400 than the 500. But like i said it depends on what you like. I own the 400 as you can see and love it, but i have riden the 500 from time to time. The 500 does have power and it can compete on the trails with the 400, but it is also heavier and i think it is a little less agile. Hope this helps.

I started out with the 2002 Scrambler 400x. I really only bought it because it was blue like the Trail Boss I bought my son. Personally, I did not like the 2 stroke. I don't really know a whole lot about 2 strokes, and the machine didn't live up to it's full potential with me. It does have good power, even stock. It's a little lighter than the 500, but not too much. I love my Scrambler 500. It's perfect for me. Great power, good acceleration, great in snow, mud on rocks, anything I throw at it. It would recommend it to everyone. The only mods I did were K N filter and I junked the stock wheels and put on Holeshot XCT's mounted on Douglas .190 rims. BIG DIFFERENCE!!

thanks........ what is the top speed of the 500. I thnk i need the 4 wheel drive beacuse me and my buddies all have 4 wheel drive so far and we go to some pretty deep spots. Can the scrambler 500 handle these deep water and mud holes like my sp400 and 500 can. also about how much will this machine cost and does it cauz any problems, engine wise?

Hehe Water is fun!! I was doing pond skimming, like what super modded banshees and 250r's do. For a 600lb machine it really flies. I like it. I did fill the tranny belt with water but it came dry in about 10 minz. I dont think there is a difference in agility at all. We are talking about 4x4's so you cant compare a 400 2x4 to a 500 4x4. Obviously theres a little more fighting with the machine but i can still power slide real well and throw a sick roost.

I started out with a '97 500 for $3500 in 1999. Then bought a '00 500 for $5400. both great bikes. After having it sit in the shed for 60% of a year I decided to unload it and get something used and less money. Bought a '97 400 for $2900. Makes it easier to deal the times it just sits.

I can honestly say I do not miss my 500's at all. I ride with 2-500's. a 2001 and 2002 I go everywhere they go and quicker. The 02 edges me slightly on top-end. Mine is 4-5 years older, yet the ride is no different. It still gives me a great feeling knowing I have a quad I enjoy even more at close to half the cost.
Buy used. It's not to hard to find a used quad with very little use.

Also, yes, Scramblers will go through the deep stuff with ease. You just gotta do it in a different manner. Don't creep through, hammer it!
