Default Engine clatter at idle on Xpedition 425

I just purchased a used 2000 Xpedition 425, and it has a strange noise at idle. The noise only occurs at idle and it sounds like a clattering or rattling noise, almost like a ball bearing is bouncing around. It goes away as soon as I give it gas. Has anyone heard of this before?

The noise that you are hearing is the clutches. It is nothing to worry about. They all do it.

What 425Xpedition said is true. Specifically, it is probably the primary clutch buttons. If you want to fix it yourself, you will need a clutch puller, a clutch holding device, and a spider removal tool. The primary clutch buttons are inexpensive and easy to change with the tools.

that's correct, the Xpedition is a auto-clutch 5 speed, so the noise may be a loose valve, may be time for setting the valves.

More than likely yours valves need to be set. My Scrambler used to do the same thing until I set the valves.

Sorry for the mis-info, Obie12552. I had auto on the brain.

Use an auto stethoscope and see if you can pinpoint the noise. You can also try a 4 ft piece of 1/4" vinyl hose if you don't have a stethoscope. Put the stethoscope (or hose) to one ear and plug the other ear.

If you have any luck, you will be able to pinpoint the noise.

Good Luck,

I guess I should have been more specific. The noise comes the centrifical clutch.

If it was a loose valve or improperly set valves would I hear it only at idle or through all rpm ranges?
