Is there anything good about the 700?
#1
Ok,
I don't mean to offend anyone. I realize some people take name brands very serious.
I am a new 700 0wner. I am also new to Polaris. I sold my 98 Honda 450 for my new 2003 700.
I came across this site after I purchased my 700.
Honsetly, I may not have purchased it if I had read some of these messages first.
I don't mean to whine, I am just very concerned that I have made a very expensive error.
This is probably the last new ATV I will buy (atleast until 3 kids get through colloege).
I was hoping for 7 years or so of somewhat relaible service.
I am very easy on my equipment. I can't afford alot of repairs so I keep everything in new condition.
I don't go into the mud, hit trees, or anything else that may cause damage. I "babie" all my equipment.
I simply use it around the yard, for snow removal, all light stuff.
After reading some of these posts, I am wondering if I should sell and cut my loss's? (old style water pump)
Ok, 700 owners, will this bike last? What can I do to extend its life? Should I sell? NEED HELP!!!!!!!!
Thanks to all for your help

Overall the 700 is very reliable. They do have some minor problems that can be adressed under warranty. The biggest thing is the coolant leak.I have a friend that had this problem and he took it back under warranty. The dealer fixed it and has had NO problems for 8 months and he goes riding every weekend to the mountains. I have ridden the 700 and it is a beast!!!

From your description of the type of riding/work you do with it, I wouldnt worry at all. The main problem with the 700, is the waterpump cover tends to warp and you will develop a coolant leak. The cover, now has a metal reinforcing plate which was added and acts like a stiffner and eliminates the warpage problem. The waterpump on the later 2003, is the same as your 2002, plus the added stiffner. For piece of mind, just add the plate. If long term durability seems to be of concern. I can tell you that the dealer I visited today had a used 2002 500 HO for sale. It had 42,000 miles on it (thats not a typo, forty two thousand miles) I just purchased a 600 Sportsman today and this is my 4th polaris. I have had nothing but good luck and pleasure with the previous ones.

Thank you for the help. Is there a way to check the serial number to see if my bike is recalled, or do I need to call the dealer?
If I can ask what is the diffrence between the 600 and 700?

polaris's are just like hammers.
as long as you replace the head and handle every once in awhile, they'll last for ever..
lol..just kidding
get the water pump cover update, and put some a-arm guards on to keep from ripping the cv boots, and you'll be fine..
ohh and i suggest a good clutch kit if ya can afford it.

What does a good clutch kit cost? Can a non-mechanical person install.
What brand is the best? Where is the best place to purchase ?
Sorry for all the questions, thanks for the help

HPD, AAEN both have very good clutch kits for them. They are about 150 for the kit and will make a big difference. But if your only using it for utility work then keep it stock. Clutch kits make it more fun to ride and play.

Oh i also have heard ALOT of good things about the Heelclicker clutch kit for the sportsmans. You gain more power throuhgout the whole power band with no slippage and much better wear. I think your top speed is also increased. That would be one fast 700!!

If your question is?? Is the SP700 reliable??? Answer!! Mine isn't. That's half the problem. The other half is their ARROGANT customer service dept. I'm not sure if I spelled ARROGANT right. In other words their customer service dept is a bunch of ********. Just my opinion.
