Default ABS

does anyone think abs would work on the bigger heavier 500 700 600 sportsmans. I think it would be great.

Give me your thoughts.

Default ABS

I assume you are referring to Anti-Lock Braking System?

I think it is a neat idea for heavy machines, but i'm not sure if the benefit would outweigh the cost involved. ABS systems are not simple in any way. To add to an ATV it would probably add 2-3k to the cost of the machine. Here's why:

-Each wheel would require Expensive wheel speed / RPM sensors.
-All ABS systems require some type of costly actuator/ solenoid for brake line pressure modulation
-The control electronics are sophisticated, sensitive (and expensive). Requires a DSP (digital signal processor) and / or Microcontroller, custom engineered, with software algorythms specifically written to analyze input from wheel speed sensor(s) and instruct the brake pressure modulator what to do / when to activate.

I'd go into more detail about what ABS would require, but I think you guys get the point. At 7k for a SP700, I know I would not pay another 2-3k, just for ABS.

If you've ever had to replace any part of an ABS system on a car, you'll know about the cost factor (i.e. $1500 for GM style pressure modulator).

Also, some riders, especially advanced, use the ability to lock up the brakes as part of their riding style. Even though these are big machines, some guys ride VERY aggressive and use predictable braking as part of their technique - to this point, ABS systems are not very predictable as to how sensitive they are & when they activate. Some systems are downright annoying and abrupt.

Keep up with the good ideas!! It's thoughts like this that make our machines better....

This is my 2 cents worth - what do you other guys think??
