what shock will fit on a 400ex?
#1
My riding bud has a brand new 400ex and the rear shock is already blown. He found a brand new take-off on ebay but missed the end of the auction due to DSL problems... grrrr. Is there another type of shock that will fit/work on a 400ex? Hunting around for more than one thing might increase his chances of finding something. He just dropped the bucks on the quad like 2 weeks ago so he doesn't have a big pile of cash to throw at a shock right now.
Thanks in advance for any replies

well, there are stickers on the quad that say "not for riders over 240 pounds"... or something like that. My bud is heavier than that so he won't try to get Honda to fix it.
I've seen this same dude ride KDX's HARD all day (this guy rips on a bike) and when his KDX was down he ripped on a little TTR-125 all day long and never blew the shock... This stock 400ex shock sucks. He'd probably settle for another stock shock though just so he could hopefully ride and have better luck this time. If there's something better, he'd like to know about that too.
Thanks

OK guys... I appreciate the replies and I know you're just trying to help but I asked a specific question. Let me be clear; My friend is not taking the quad back to the dealership! I would take it back. You would take it back. Most people would take it back. My friend is not going to do it.
So back to the original question; are there any other shocks that will fit a 400ex so he can try to find something on Ebay?
thanks

drip is right. only a shock for a 400ex will work. Your buddy should upgrade the original shock before looking for something else to fit. Of course there is always the aftermarket, but I don't think that is the answer you are looking for. The 400ex shock is a very good unit, it's not Honda's fault that your buddy is a big tubba Have the original rebuilt by a compotent builder and get a different spring with a higher spring rate. The right builder can make that stock shock strech out to around 10.5 inches of travel and revalve it to work superb.

OK thanks. As long as we know the options, we can move on.
boogerbub, thanks for the info but the "big tubba" comment wasn't really needed.
I will also disagree a bit; the stock 400ex shock is crap. We've talked to several suspension shops and they won't even bother rebuilding them. Maybe in the ATV world, that is a good shock but for some reason stock dirtbike shocks are far superior... and that's what I'm used to. My bud really wants a nice aftermarket shock for his 400ex, he just doesn't have the cash for it right now.

Sorry about the big tubba; bubba. I know that dirt bike shocks are superior, the factories are in direct competition on the dirt bikes and they will experiment with things such as internal bladders and what not, not to mention that you don't really need a high dollar shock on a dirtbike for it to feel great because they weigh half as much as a quad. However, here in the quad world stock shocks don't come much better than the one on the 400ex. Not to bash your mechanics or anything, but I would have to think twice about taking advice from a shock man who isn't even willing to try and work with a shock regardless of what it is. I had mine valved for my type of riding and I was taking some very big air and it worked flawlessly. I have ridden machines that have had the rear shock lengthened and it made a tremendous difference. You can surf the net and find a shop that will do it and I am certain your bud will be pleased. You can even get a dual rate spring set up for it- I think elka suspension makes it. If it had the full treatment performed on it, the cost would be somewhere around $550. I'm talking lengtening, revalving, and daul rate springs. For that price, you'd be hard pressed to find an aftermarket shock that would work as good.
