Scrambler Chain Gaurd, too noisey
#1
My scrambler sounds like it's falling apart. I tracked the sound down to the black chain gaurd, but I can't make it quiet. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it other than It sounds bad. Iv'e checked the tension, and it's fine. Has anyone else had this problem, is there a way to fix it? If I bought the HPD chain tensioner would that fix it?

Do you lube the chain on a regular basis? I had the same problem with my trail boss. It drives you crazy huh! Try useing gear oil (80w-90) as chain lube, you can pick it up at any auto parts store. It worked great for me.

I ride in the sand a lot and I'm afraid that gear oil would only attract the sand. I use some chain lube out of a spray can that works well for lubrication, but it doesn't attract sand. What would happen if i just took the guard off? Oh and yes it drives me crazy! I guess i could try the gear oil, I just don't want to gum it up with sand.

i think your talking about the black plastic piece that the chain runs through??
i took mine off only because i have a full skid plate now so i didn't have to worry about the chain draging on the ground and it was always full of mud so i didn't really like the fact of always having my chain run in mud even if it was on a dry road.
i would take yours off if you don't bottom out alot in the rear or if you buy a after market skip plate then you could take of the round metal disc next to the chain too.

Ok.. thank you if I am understanding you correctly the chain guard is only there to keep the chain from running on the ground. If that is the case then you have solved my problem, because I just bought the skid plate a month ago and already have it on there. I guess I will go take the stupid plastic guard off. .. Many thanks man. I just didn't know if there was a another purpose for the chain guard or not. .......

Are you talking about the the guard that bolts to the tranny or the one one on the underside of the swingarm? If you are talking about the one on the tranny, my suggestion would be to bank $285 for the case half that you will punch a hole in. I've put put one complete tranny in and get the case half welded on the other after the chain broke at the master link and knocked a hole in it. The sound you are hearing is a dry link that is not flexing as it goes around the sprockets. That means instead of the chain hitting the plastic guard, it will do the same thing against your aluminum case. I think you are REALLY asking for trouble. I found that if the chain is well lubed you will not hear the clunking sound. Also, doesn't the lower guard also act as a guide to the axle sprocket? Does the skid plate contain the chain well enough to prevent it from coming off when it fills full of mud or debris? Just my two cents.........
