From experience the geckos are an all-around decent tire, but if you get into the big hill climbs they will leave you wanting a different tire. They are alot heavier than a Hauler or a Sand Skate II. I've got the gecko's still, but will be buying some 8 paddle haulers in the Spring. The difference in weight is what will either get you to the top of a long hill climb, or leave you stranded 3/4 of the way up. I don't know about you, but having go backwards down a steep dune or tree shot isn't fun. I've tried the haulers and sand skates (borrowed from friends). Either one is a good choice. They are more expensive, but I believe you get what you pay for.

Everyone has their reason for running the type of tire they use. I use the Scat track Hauler 20-10-10, 7 paddles. I ride at the St.Anthouy sand dunes and the heavier molded straight paddles and the V-paddles just wont get me up the steep dunes like Choke Cherry. The 400ex is not a powerhouse in the dunes so I need every advantage I can get. If ultimate traction, ability to get up and over the big dunes and fast accelerate, is your concern the Hauler is a great choice. I have tried the V-paddles and they cut my ability to climb by about 50%. I have been told that the V-paddles are great for turning and yes they do help you turn easier but a good rider knows that the key to a good turn is shifting your weight, I have no problem turning with the Hauler and neither do the Banshee & Raptor riders that ride with me. Other dunes and different conditions may make the other tires good choices but for the conditions that I ride in Haulers work best for me. The 7 paddles is about as many paddles as the 400 can handle and 6 would probably work fine also.

I ran Sand Skate II's on my 400EX and liked them but it sounds like Sandrider knows what he's talking about, so I'd listen to him. The Skates were nice but I was always the slowest 400EX up Competition Hill at Sand Mountain (Nevada) so I got pretty tired of that crap.

BUT... the Skate II's work great on my new Predator, so I have no complaints there.

i have sand skate II's on my z right now and it works pretty good, its a little hard to slide with them sometimes, but overall they work good, i should put them on the ex and see how it handles with them.
can you still turn sharp and slide with staight blades, i might just get some straight ones for my z and the run the sand skates one the ex

Sandrider:

Did you try the 8 paddle haulers on your 400ex?? That seems to be what most people put on theirs out here. Was the motor stock? I've done work to mine and plan on doing more, so I'm thinking that 8 paddles is the way to go. I can see how the 7 paddles would help, but theres got to be a point where they might not be enough paddle for something with a cam or high compression piston.
