Default 300ex or 400ex?

I'm looking to purchase a second quad, a sport this time. I'm still in college and have to pay for ALL of it as I go, no loans either. I can handle a small payment, and I would really like to get a fun sport quad. The utility is nice, but the sport offers some things the ute is missing. Whatever i get, it will be used, because the payment on a new four wheeler is too high right now. I want something that I can ride the trails through the thick woods at my house, and take it out to my friends farm and keep up with him on his Z400. I keep up, and beat him even with my ute, because he isnt that good, but, I would really like to be up front, and out of sight.
My question is, should I go for the 400, or just a 300 and save some money. I know you are going to say 400, but do I really need it? You have to realize, and little bit I can save, helps a lot. It would have to be around a 99' or so. I found a 99' 400 with a pipe for $3200 in really good shape, is that is decent price?

You will not keep up with your friend on the 300, period. Go 400, but dang, no reverse, ouch. Good luck, have fun and ride hard.

Get the 400EX... that's a good price. I sold mine for $4k but I included a BUNCH of goodies with it (full dune tires, skidplates, nerfs, full exhaust, etc). Wish I coulda kept it but couldn't do that AND get the new machine...

BTW, you get used to not having reverse. Once you stop a few times in spots where you have to back yourself out, you learn not to stop in places like that anymore.

I agree. Get the 400. Way more potential and a nice ride stock. I think you can do better than that price for a '99 though. You can usually find an '01 for that price. I would look around. Check ebay and some of the other forums as well. I think you can find a better deal. Good luck.

Do yourself a favor and buy the 400EX!!!!!! You won't regret it. You may also think about the Suzuki Z400......it has a little more bang for the buck!

Thanks for the advice guys. I rode my buddy's Z400, and I was not impressed to say the least. I like honda for their resale value, and reliability, and that's another reason I want a honda, i'm not so scared to buy used, since I have always bought new.
so you think I can find one cheaper than 3200?

For a 99 yes. I would look for something a little newer if you have the funds. I would think you could find a nice stock 01 for around $3200.
