tight trails with 2wd bikes?
#1
Ok..my plan was buy a scrambler..i wanted the sportyness of a sport quad, but kinda wanted 4wd. Well after seeing how much performance you can get out of a 500 scram, im not sure if its the bike for me. Im thinking Preditor or Raptor..the raptor cause its been around for a few years..so most of the bugs have been worked out..the Pred cause from everything i read on it..it rocks!
NOW my problem..i do alot of tight trail riding..rocks, minor mud..some small logs and stuff..but would a 2wd quad be able to handle these kinda trails? THe only person i know that had a quad like this was my cousin.he HAD a banshee and found it sucked in the snowy rough trails..he fly by everyone on the straights..but when it came to tight, slow trails he found he was getting stuck alot.
SOOO..i need convincing that the 2wd bikes are just gonna SUCK soo bad at these trails and i should get the scram..cause its the only 2wd/4wd sport quad out there..(dont want a P650..my dad has one)

You can't really compare what you are looking for to your friend's Banshee. I'm not a sport bike guy but I know that the Banshee is not a low-end power kind of ride. Many of the sport bikes out there will go most places on the trails and have enough power for low speed crawling. The thing is - Just what kind of riding do you do? I run my Eiger in 2wd 95% of the time, perhaps more than that. However, that 5% or less that I use 4wd is what gets me home without a tow or gives me more control on steep rough hills. If you ride in the company of other bikes with 4wd or a winch, than not having 4x4 will only be an occasional inconvience. If you ride alone (never a good idea) and go through rough trails, then having a 4wd option is a must.

Well right now i ride my dads P650..a great bike and on MOST of the trails right now..not alot of snow..i can go fine in just 2wd. Its only on rare occasions that i'll have to go into 4wd. But again..theres not alot of snow down right now.
I was thinking with some good tires, a raptor or Pred might be able to handle the tight trails with snow on em.
Also how deep is too deep for the rap? Like would it bother it to get it past the pegs?

The 2wd sport quads will go in the snow. I ride tight woods on my Warrior. It will all depend on the tires. I have Holeshots and they performed great in the snow...about 5 to 6 inches here. A friend had a KFX 400 with stock tires and had problems. He now has Gators and no problems.
The only reason I would get a 4wd is if I liked mud. I would put 27" tires on it and run through everything. I hate mud so that won't happen! If you get a 2wd then have enough sense to know your limits, that's all.
Out of the choices you listed, the Predator or Raptor would be my choice...although the Warrior can do it all for less!

i run a raptor with 23" front and 22" rear holeshot xct, designed for woods and rocks. it gives me a little more ground clearance, plus i geard it down some, i dont need to go 75 mph! with this setup i'm happy, and with reverse, it makes it even easier. the fuel tank should run all day, and its got plenty of guts. this setup suits me and is sounds like our riding is similar. I hear the Pred is a good quad, but have no experience with them, so.

I ride a Warrior also, like Mascman....have NEVER had a problem with it being 2x. We ride rocky mountain trails, straight up and down, snow, mud, slippery granite, roots, ruts, you name it...Right now, for winter, I've got Maxxis Sur Traks on the back, and it goes ANYWHERE. You may want the power of a Raptor or Predator, I'm a smaller person; although, you can only go so fast around hairpin corners with a rut and root in the middle and trees on both sides. Point being, 2x should not be a problem if it's a 4-stroke with suitable tires. I watch Banshees struggle up there on a regular basis....just not enough grunt.

What about ruts and stuff like that..what kinda clearence does the rap have? Well on the trails here..i'd say 75% of the time your doing less then 20kms/hr. Lots of rocks, stubbs..bumppy stuff...Would it work alright at that?
Basically i dont want to limit myself to a utillity quad thats dressed up as a sport quad (scram)

ground clearance on the 2003 Rap with the stock 20" rear tires is 4.5". That can be adjusted with a taller tire...the biggest difference (IMO) is having a GOOD skid plate and being able to power over whatever you don't actually have clearance for.

yep. ds mama's right. i have 22" on the back to bring it up some, and a good gyt-r skidplate [PRM just as good at half the money} 23" on the front, and change front sprocket one tooth on the front, bam! you have a nice trailing quad. not too wide, and the six ply tires are very stable and not "tippy" man i hate that BS. and you can soften yer susp some with the stiffer tires too!
no problem with power, of course hehe
