Default Shock set-ups for FSW's???

Everyone knows buy know that the whoops are a big part of the the race. Not only making it thru them, but more importantly carrying momentium through them and UP the HILL! Most of us won't have the power to play "catch-up" if we find our selves 2 or 3 bikes down throught the whoops.

SO my question IS???? What is the best way to set-up your REAR shock, so to soak up the whoops and put the power to the ground??? I saw last year that their were alot of people (banging away)hitting the top of the whoops, and this cant be the best way. Instead, I would think it would be in a power-wheelie with the back shock set up very light(no restriction on the way down), and hard on the way up. Am I even close???

Ofcourse it would be just as bad to run out of gear half way through the whoops also, So am I way off running a 14/40 combo, with 23" haulers???

Bigger, last time AZsand and I were there which was about 3-4 weeks ago the whoops wern't that bad. The got a little worse by the end of the weekend but nothing to drastic. My advice is to remove your shock and run up the hill backwards.

Really, I would just leave suspension alone and power through them. There not bad enough to buck the rear end of the bull up in the air. Stay middle seat full throttle and you'll be fine.

Bigger,

Yes you want the rear shock to be soft, but you have to have a good rebound to push the axle back down to the sand.

If you go through the whoops and the back end bucks from side to side, most likely you don't have enough rebound.

If the back end kicks you straight up in the butt, you have to much rebound.

You can play with the pre-load and the rebound on the shock. BUT, only one at a time.

If you have to much pre-load, you won't have a good weight tranfer to the rear wheels and you will spin the tires. If you have to little pre-load, you will be looking skyword.

Have I completely confused you?

I will be out there to give a hand to people that need it. If they are on DS's of course!!!

SO I sould set my SAG to the proper settings, then play with the Compression(Soft),and the rebound(hard) to make it successful???

I can get better starts with alot of sag,but the suspension will then bottom out. If I set my sag for my weight then I have a "wheely machine" but I can go thru the whoops with out bottoming out.

The suspension has to be set up for what you want to do. If you want to get great starts on drag raceing, then set it up for that. If you want to play in the dunes and have fun, then I would set it up for that.

If we think we are just going out to Glamis to have fun and not try to bring home the trophy then lets do that, Have fun.

If we are trying to bring home the trophy(girl ), then lets put our thinking caps on and do what we have to do.

Like it was stated above, if the whoops aren't that bad, then don't worry to much and have a good time. Just watch out were you point those horns.

p.s. Look at the post. There are a lot of "if's"....... If is the shortest word in "life". Life is what we make of it. We can make things complicated or we can just have fun!!!! You have to make the decision.

ScoobyDFW with my set up last year I was reaching only about 38 MPH. The Sparks Raptor I would say was going a round 50 or so per my SWAG. The Big Bore Banshee hit about 85 to 95 MPH. I had changed tires to 22 inch tall and all I could due was pull third up OLDS. 4th gear would make it to the top but very slow.

we were down at glamis for the last 5 days and went to olds a few times. The whoops were pretty big but they can get way bigger. Whoever can get through the whoops first has a good chance of winning. Sean
