What pipe coating lasts the longest?
#1
How long does the chrome last vs powder vs nickel coating, which one lasts the longest & how long does it last? I wanted to get an HPD race pipe for my 400 & wondered if I should just get the cheap black & get it coated or just go w/ the chrome from HPD?
Thanks

Hey Jim, when i got my race pipe HPD told me that the chroming wasnt sticking to the type of metal that they had to use. This pipe is over a year old ,maybe they figured something out on the chroming.I got the black pipe and then had it ceramic coated by a local powder coating shop.So far it has held up extremely well and you don't have to worry about it rusting or bluing at the head.I have a pretty decent pic of the pipe in the gallery.Hope this helps.

CED, thanks. That pipe on you quad looks GREAT!!! I didn't know thats what powder coating looked like, it shines like chrome. How much did the coating cost you? By the way, I know you were trying to save weight so you ditched the 4wd but w/ paddels on the front w/ 4wd, wasn't that an advantage going up the sand hills? I though all 4 wheels digging in would be a benifit. I've never been on sand, just curious. By the way Kevin M, who is CPI? Do they have a web site or address & is this their own pipe they're selling or are they just selling HPD's stuff?
Thanks again.

Jim,Before i did all my modifications i was running 4 sand paddles for a couple of years. It would come out the hole real quick but then fall on it's face.In order to put the pipe on i had to lose the 4 wheel drive, because my year bike used the chains to the front end.The coating cost me $80 bucks ,because i was his first ceramic coating. He now charges around $110 to $120 for pipe and stinger. What's nice about the coating is no rust or bluing.Later.

CPI stands for Custom Pipes Inc. They are well-known for their Banshee drag pipes and I'd put their Polaris race pipe up against anything else on the market. Its similar to the HPD, but I'd say its even larger and their chrome plating is excellent. 4 months and it still looks like new.
