Default 2002 300ex rev limiter changed or defective?

About 6 months ago, my dad bought a brand new 2002 300ex. The rev limiter works in reverse but does not work in forward gears. Did Honda change the limiter or do you think it is defective?

Take it to Honda, sounds defective. Even if it's not they will probably replace it for you for free.

My dad probably won't get it replaced. He kind of likes the idea that he may have a slight performance advantage. He's 58 years old and knows he won't over-rev it and I doubt that you could do any damage to the ol' 300 anyhow. We were just surprised that it didn't work like mine. (I had a 300ex several years ago.) And to think that a defective rev limiter possibly got by Honda inspectors?

i didn't even know the 300ex had a rev limit.

until i put a pipe and jet in mine...............
the first time i rode it after that
it kept hitting the limit.......

when it was stock i couldn't imagin it had a rev limit..................
it would scream and scream and no sign of a limit

Are you sure the rev limiter is defective? The limiter is set at way lower rpm's in reverse, while it lets the motor rev out pretty far in forward.

I had a 1994 300ex, Sparks pipe, 12.5 piston, & 270 cam, so yes I know about the rev limiter. I eventually sent mine to Sparks to get it modified so there was no rev limit. I watched my dad take his 300ex up the road the other day and I don't think he could have revved it any further. Maybe it can't hit it when it is completely stock but I sure thought that mine did.

The Honda's rev limits are definately set a little low, when I put 20" holeshots on my son's 300ex for some informal racing, it ran slower, made less power because it constantly hit the limit in the lower gears,it was faster with stock tires !!! I ended up putting a 14 tooth sprocket on the front for the holeshots, made a lot of difference. I am currently assembling parts for a rebuild, and a modified rev limiter is one of the first things I picked up. I know the Recon we had pepped up with some jetting and a modded snorkel, but it ruined the bottom end, it took off great, but revved so nice, you would be hitting the limit in 1st gear after about 15 ft, and had to keep upshifting.

If you are talking about the sputter when you try to go past half throttle in reverse and that that sputter does not happen in forward gears than it is not defective.

that is exactly what i mean, but i thought on my ex that it would kick in in forward, even when it was stock.
