First off I need to know if its a manual transfer case or is it the push button 4 wheel drive. On the push button the front drive axle is always spinning but the half shafts are not locked into the front diff by the actuator. If this is the case then GM had problems with the actuator on the front diff. I can get you the testing info if ou want it, so you don't guess at it. Now on the manual transfer case if the lever moves free and all of the linkage is hooked up you could have transfer case problem, worn gear, broken chain, something like that. But that is not comon. So give me all the dirty info on it and I'll give you all the info that your heart desires. Oh and by the way I'm a Master ASE Tech been working on cars and trucks for too damn long. Rather be out riding, but my wife is expensive.

ck all the fuses, theres one in the fuse panel for the 4x4 selanoid in the front end.if the fuse is blown chances are the sel. is shorted out.ive seen this alot!replace it and see if it blows when you shift it into 4x4.if it does unplug the sel. and try it again
if that doesnt seem to be the problem, you might want to ck for power and ground at the connector, with it in 4x4,if thats ok you probably still need a sel.
i too am a ase master tech,it dont mean squat!i know some i wouldnt let work on my kids tri-cycle

True derbyking the piece of paper dont mean squat other than I took the time to take the tests. I know too many techs that are certified that shouldn't work on a lawn mower. But on the other hand that piece of paper also make me more money, that in turn pays for all my little toys that I have. But its better to take advise from a known good source than bubba who cant offer any advice. Chances are that if the transfer case is shifting then the fuses are good, seeing as its on the same circuit. But getting him all the correct info with the procedures and diagrams if better than sending him on a wild chase.

Start by checking the 4x4 fuses. If they are okay, then lift all four wheels off of the ground. Then start the truck and put it in gear and select a 4 wheel drive range. Then get under the truck to see if the front drive shaft is turning, if it is, then your problem is your front axle acutator. GM had a problem with them and made an update kit to engage faster. Or you can buy an aftermarket kit that will replace the front actuator with a manual cable to actuate the front axle. Also another easy check would be to see if the light for the front axle lights up on the display near the transfer case shift lever, but that would only work if you had a manual shift transfer case. If the light does not light up it usually is the actuator which is at fault.

Yeah the autuator is, how should I say a known bad part. I haven't needed to replace one in quite a while but not too many people around Kansas City even need 4x4's. Most of them are kid shuttles for socker moms. The easiest way as you said is to check for power and ground at the connector on the fron diff. I'm not sure if they ever improved on the design but I opted for the ol faithfull manual case on our 01 k1500. Now on my blazer I hate to think when its going to fail on me........ Leaving the lake at midnight with the trailer loaded, yeah that sounds about right.
