Default Newbie performance questions...

Hi Guys/Gals!
I just bought a 2001 DS650 last weekend and i was wondering what performance mods worked the best. I like the Woods Stg I kit, but it seems a little pricy. Does replacing the carb(w/ a 45mm) gain that much over a properly jetted stocker? I know there are other pipes out as well as rev-unlimiters that prolly perform well, but i don't know which are considered the best performance wise. Is the Woods pipe very loud? I read an older article stating it was very loud, but it was an older/different design than is currently used. If i were to hop my DS up in steps, what order would you suggest to be the smartest in the quest for more power? I'm not a big fan of losing a ton of low end to gain a bunch up top. Lastly, what kind of hp would your suggested mods put out and how would my DS compare to other simmilarly modified machines(ie: Raptor, Banshee, ?)?

TIA!

First mod, Pipe I have a big gun, love the sound and it fits pretty tight. It is loud. Ron wood is a good pipe also, most bombs I saw at four stroke wars were running that pipe. The trinity pipe looks great, but I did not care for the sound of it.

Next mod, jetting of course it goes along with a pipe. Increase air flow via pipe or air filter and you need to jet.

I like the dynojet kit, works very well with the stock carb.

Carb mount air filter, if you dont ride in water the carb mount filter will give you an extra couple horses up top.

Next mod, cdi box. I run the woods box and it works great.

So, what I have done to my baja is Big gun exhaust, K&N carb mount filter, ron wood cdi box, and dynojet jetting. It runs very strong, but is not a drag racer.

Thats my 2 cents worth. If I were doing it over again, unless I wanted to go big bore I would do the same thing.

I would say the first thing to do would be Pipe, air filter, and jet kit. Combined with a new CDI would be a great first step. Yes the Woods pipe is loud, but I like it, it has a nice deep grunt to it. Although many people are now switching to the MBRP Power Tech 4 system. It is supposed to be fairly quiet and give great power. Woods definitely carries the best CDI box.

With a pipe/filter/jet kit you should probably be somewhere around 45HP, give or take a few. From my experience you should have no problem beating a Raptor with similar mods done to it. Once a Shee has more than pipes on it, they are hard to beat.

So if I were you it would go....
1. Pipe, filter, jet kit
2. CDI box
3. 45mm carb

After that most people starting getting into cams and hi-comp pistons, big bore kits....the list goes on and on. Hopefully I've helped with all my rambling.

Dang!!! He beat me, guess I should learn how to type faster.

your question about does the 45 make a big difference than a well jetted stock cab, after installing my 45 carb i gain about a 4 to 5 bike lenghts on my buddy's banshee, my stock carb may not of been the best jetted but i dont think that if the jetting was dead on it would of picked up that much room

i would agree with the other two about going with, pipe, jetting and filter first, then the cdi, do a search on here theres one about one thats i think $80, then the carb, thats how i did mine, also in steps

do gain a little more you can change out your sprockets, i have gone with a 15/43 setup and its seems to work well, it will give you some more bottom end torque

The dyno charts that scooby posted spoke volumes about mods and HP. I spent 2 hours going over them and came to the conclusion that the HP gains are very predictable for each mod. I wish that more guys with bolt on mods dynoed though it sure would have rounded out the overall info the charts had to offer. AZsand, yours was very impressive . You can see the HP gains from just running alcohol 5-8 HP!! Thats cheap HP.
Any way, all above info is very good and if you want to see what high compression and cams will get you check out scoobys post.
