Default Prairie 650 Questions

I just made a deal on a new 2002 Prairie, $6057.00 out the door including tax (6%) and title for MI. (oh and a trailer hitch..) Is this a decent deal or did I come out behind? from what I could tell it seemed pretty good.
Now my real questions start.

1) Do I CV guards for this machine or do the stockers work well?

2) Is the stock skid plate ok or should I go aftermarket? (If aftermarket can I change the oil filter with one in place)

3) I hear the stock tires suck, I was thinking Mud Lites, anyone try them out on this machine yet. I ride a real assortmant of trails (Wayne Nat. forest to the state trails in MI) everything from mud, to hardpack with some small rocky trails from time to time. Will they work well?

4) I heard a LOT about the EPI black spring, do I "need it" and how difficult is the install? I rebuilt the upper 1/2 of the motor on my Rancher so do you think this will be a big issue to install. Any special tricks or tips?

Thanks for all the information!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. The cv boots are better protected on the 650 than most. May or may not need anything, depending on your terrain. Most people don't need anything.

2. Skid plates aren't bad at all. The aftermarket ones have advantages, like better coverage, less denting on rocks, or more slippery. If you got the cash, get em, but don't get them before tires, winch, and DiamondG snorkle.

3. Mudlites are excellent tires, but bearclaws are even better for all around riding (not as good in mud). You pick, depending on your need for mud performance. The 650 can take almost any ATV tire available without a lift or spacers. Outlaws are touch to wide, should to consult more people about that if you ever think about outlaws. Wider 28 tires might rub too much in front, other than that, get whatever you want, they will fit fine.

4. Yes, put the black spring on now, and make sure the belt is at the low end of the deflection spec. 30 to 45 minutes, piece of cake for someone that can do engine work. I have compiled the necessary tech info to do this and other common stuff on my website.

THANKS for the info, that makes a lot of sence. I was wondering however what is the DiamondG snorkle. I would guess this allows a person to transverse deeper water? I used to do a fair amount of mud running but would like to set the bike up more in the middle of the road (mud to hardpacked trail)
On my old bike I had Goodyear Mudrunner tires, did a GREAT job in mud but the over all feel of the bike decreased greatly on dry trails (plus they sucked a LOT of power from my little Rancher). I think I will take a look at both the Mud lites and the bear claws, they both seems like good tires. I am not too "up" on the bear claws so I will do a few searched on those tonight.
Do you feel the Kaw. has any other "weak" points I need to address at the time of purchase? ALso in a 2500lbs winch large enough for this vehicle or is a 3000lbs needed. I noticed Cabelas sells a 3000lbs for about the cost of a 2500lbs, anyone know if this winch is of good quality?
Thanks

If I was going to buy a winch I would get the Ramsey 3000 with wireless remote. Yeah, it cost some bucks but for me the wireless remote would be worth it.

The other winch I finally thought about was the Rule winch. It cost a little more than the Ramsey but is rated at 3,300lbs but also dont have the wireless remote.

DiamondG snorkle basically gives you more power, but not really any other difference. Fits the same.

Howdy,
the Diamond G snorkel doesnt show any different on the outside of the quad. It fits the same as the stock one, it is just larger diameter and smooth. It will make quite a nice power increase over the stocker.

It fits exactly where the stock snorkle is. No cutting. You cant see it or tell it is done in any way except you probably can hear more growl from the air intake.
