Default Jet Kits?

Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with either Dynojet or K&N jet kits. What are the differences between the two? It seems like the K&N is cheaper. Is this for a reason? Also, why is it better to buy a $60 jet kit instead of just getting a bigger main jet and raising the needle a notch when you get a pipe? Would the difference really be that noticeable? Any opinions? Thanks.

Default Jet Kits?

They are both made by Dynojet. I bought the K&N and the box inside the box had Dynojet written all over it. Is it worth $60? That is a million dollar question I asked everyone for 6 months and never got a decent answer. A friend that works on bikes and not on quads told me to get the kit so I got the kit. The needle is definitely of a different design. I bought a pipe (White Brothers E-Series), K&N filter and the jet kit. $300 later I got quicker throttle response and am overall satisfied with the minimal gains. My quad (like yours a 2002 Scrambler 500 4x4) was able to lift the front wheels of the ground bone stock just by hitting the gas (no pulling on bars) and hit 60.2 mph by way of gps. My advice is this: If you have $300 burning a hole in your pocket get a clutch kit. I got the one from Aeen Performance and could not believe the difference. Best money spent. Can't hit the gas like I used to, quad just wants to wheelie. If you have $600 burning a hole in your pocket get a clutch kit and pipe/jets/filter. After that it takes unreasonable amounts of money for any significant gains. I do a lot of trail riding and with my current setup I can exit every turn with the front end floating of the ground. Fast enough for me.
After buying the quad I was in the same position as you are and searched the boards seeing what others have done. I went with Aeen Performance because of someone named 3TV (If you can't find anything I saved the threads in a text file for reference) and the detailed tests and comparisons he did. As far as a pipe goes, I did not want anything from the Polaris Performance shops because their pipes look like they are welded on the weekends in someone’s basement. I don't care what the power gains if it looks like a tractor muffler. Also, I did not want to go loud, after a week with the White Brothers E-Series I even ordered the quiet core.

Sorry for the rant, hope this helps.

Chris

Default Jet Kits?

live4war, did your parts list with the K&N kit have all these parts including the slide spring? This is the parts list for the Dynojet kit I got off there web site. Did you have to drill out a plug to get at the air screw adjustment? How many disks are you running in the pipe? Is it way louder than stock or just deeper? Thanks.

PARTS LIST
1 Main Jet DJ142
1 Main Jet DJ146
1 Main Jet DJ150
1 Main Jet DJ155
1 Slide Spring DSP007
1 Fuel Needle DNO198
1 Adjusting Washer DW0001
1 E-Clip DE0001

Same parts list - you have to understand, K&N literally took the Dynojet kit as you see it on their website in the clear plastic box and put it in a K&N box. I even called Dynojet to ask technical questions about the kit. Plug was out on mine from the factory, unless the dealer played with it before delivery. As for the pipe, I am running the full set of disks that came with the pipe (eight I think). Pipe is significantly louder, and deeper; get the quiet core. You will still be louder, with a nice deep thump, but at a tolerable level. Everybody has their own definition of what is loud is. Let’s put it this way, if I was not happy with the performance gain, I would have the stock one back on.

What is the deal with the spring that the kits come with? Is this to adjust for the amount of vacume the carb needs to work properly? Has anyone had good luck just changing to a bigger stock jet and changing the stock needle height or do you have to change the spring?
