Xplorer 400 front sprocket and chain replacement?
#1
My ridin' buddy needs to replace his front chain and sprocket on his '95 400 Xplorer. He just got his motor rebuilt and has strapped him for all his cash. He'd like to do it himself, so I told him I'd ask you guys how much trouble it was, any special tricks, what to look out for, better sprockets (stainless?) etc... I (he) would appreciate any advice.

5 years on the original is a good service life.. Replacing it is SIMPLE... This is for the VERY front sprocket thats between the front half shafts..
Compress the front suspension and tie the front right coil spring down. (tie down straps work great for this if you dont have access to spring compressors..) Jack it up,remove the right front wheel, turn the half shaft so that you can see the "spring pin" up at the end of the half shaft between the u-joint and sheere the shaft ends close to the sprocket. it will take some trial and error to get where you can swing a hammer with a pin punch, but drive the "spring pin" out.
Next, place another jack under the a-arm and jack up on it some (the first jack should be somewhere in the middle, but out of the way of any adjuster bolts for the front chain adjustment) then remove the nut and washers from the top of the strut. let the jack under the A-arm down and guide the strut out of the upper frame holder. Note that as you do this, you will be able to pull outward on the half shaft and it will slide off the "stub shaft" in the front bearing carrier. Carefully place all that aside, or put a piece of wood under it jsut to support its weight while disconnected.
Loosen the front chain adjuster and rotate it ALL the way back (I believe its full back... its either full back or full forward that will raise the splined shaft HIGHEST in the frame to allow the sprocket to clear the frame tube... It'll only come off one way..) and pull the sprocket off!!!...
Slip the chain off the rear sprocket and pull it all out. then just replace everything just as it came apart!!
Remember when adjusting, that you have to adjust the center chain first, THEN the front chain..
Its really easy to do.. and I think the last one I replaced cost about $20!!..
