Just bought a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 700!!!

Hey Guys,
I'm new to this forum, though i've posted a couple of times on the Bombardier forum. I just drove 10hrs one way to pick up a new 2002 Sportsman 700 for my wife. I paid $6199 for it BRAND NEW at a dealer in Hamilton, Alabama. I thought this was a pretty good deal and it was worth the drive to get it. After putting 8 mi's on it the first afternoon, I must say i REALLY like it! Yeah its BIG, but you get the feeling there is nothing you can't go up, over, or through. VERY comfy, and the suspension works VERY well. I bought a 01 Bombardier DS650 a month ago and really like it, but i think i like the SP700 even more. Definatly more practical(4X4, reverse, carrying capacity, independant rear suspension). Oh, it wheelies very well too!
Are there any issues that i need to be aware of? I believe there were some problems with waterpump leakage on the 02's? Anything else i need to keep an eye on?
Has anyone added a performance pipe and re-jetted the carb? I've run across a couple of slip-on exhausts for the 700, but no full systems. I don't wanna go wild on this monster, but i wanna pick up the performance a little(no that its a slouch, i'm just a hp junkie!). I'll save the hotrodding for the DS.

Birdoprey,
Congrats on the new machine! I really like mine. Keep an eye on the WaterPump Cover. They are prone to leak on that model.
Mine did not leak till around 1400 miles but Polaris still fixed it for free.

I am looking to upgrade from my '94 400L to either a Sportsman 700 or a ( I know!) Baja 650. I have always loved my Polaris's. I have had 6 sleds and 2 quads in the last 10 years all Polaris. I am looking for something a little more sporty as I do not need 4X4, winch, blade ect anymore. How does your 700 compare with the DS 650 in ride and comfort?. I know there is over 200 lbs in weight difference.
I would by a Predator 700 in a heart beat if they existed. If you did not need the 4X4 which would you like best between the 650 and the 700?

Birdoprey,
Congrats on your new ATV. You wil love it . I know you will be like me (still trying to find places it won't go thru). Our hunting club is like ATV TV. WE have 4 Polaris ATVS (2-sp700s and 2-500s) 1- rubicon, 2 - prairie 650s, and 1-660 grizzly We put them through hell. and try to see what the pros and cons are between them all and see what they can and can't go thru. The others (not Polaris) are having problems keeping up. I know some one will say that a problem you may want to look out for is the belt slipping possibly due to water. I just want to say before the warning is brought up, I haven't had a problem with mine (knock on wood). We have gone thru water 1/2 tire deep and over the tire deep and this weekend almost over the seat deep. My butt got wet i had to stand up on my seat. No lie! It went on thru it and when we got out of the swamp the 700s were leading the pack back down the dirt road to the clubhouse at over 60mph. we sat around for 1/2 hour and road for another 2 hours and the belt never slipped. so good luck with your 700.

Birdoprey,
I have a 2002 700 and have been one of the unlucky ones with the problems that I have had. I definetly bought a lemon and am in the process of litigation as I write this...These are the problems that I had with mine....
1. Fuel fittings that screw into the fuel tank leaked...Fixed at dealership...
2. Check the shift lever so that it does not rub a hole in your gas tank. I took a crow bar and pryed mine away from the gas tank. I caught it before it rubbed the hole. I know others that had to get new gas tanks.
3. Check all zerk fittings, I had one in my rear suspension that just fell out. Hole was bored too big for the zerk at the factory.
4. Stator went bad and had to get a new one.
5. Plastic boot coming from the carb cracked on these models...(I have been lucky on this one, no cracks as of yet.)
6. There is a new design out for the water pump cover. I would keep a close eye on that antifreeze fluid level. If your atv does not have the new design on it, it is just a matter of time before it leaks..Get the new design cover installed on your unit.
7. Check to make sure that you overflow hose coming from your radiator to your fill tank is no where near the exhaust. My exhaust melted a hole in the hose...
I think this was everything, I will have to check my records to be sure...Everything is fixed on my unit and it is running great. I only have 195 miles on it though. I use it for plowing snow..If you have a plow and a winch, let me know and I can give you some things to look out for there also.. If you have any more questions, let me know cause I have had a ton of experience with just about everything going wrong with it...I do love it and will not trade it for anything...
Good Luck
