Hey all,I just sold my 250r and picked up a ds650 and i must say i love the machine. My first question has to do with the rev limiter.I seem to hit it way to often.I no part of the problem is me having a 2 stroke before does not help the situation.I am not planning on buying the ron wood stage 1 kit for a while until i see what other stuff becomes available in the future.Does Ron wood sell just the cdi box that eliminates the rev limiter or is there an easy way to bypass it?Will this rotex 650 rev safely without the rev limiter?Im guessing the Bombardier puts it on to cover their asses for the first 6 months.Other then that the machine is great.I did bend both the front rims already in the woods most likely because the machine is soo damm wide i probably hit every rock in the trails. But wide is good for dunes and racing which i also do from time to time.I also here a rattle coming from somewhere in the engine area only at higher rpms??Maybe part of the exaust??Please let me no if anyone else has heard this. The suspention is great on this machine also.We were out on the dunes today(Or what we here in Connecticut call dunes, which is basically a large sandpit)and jumping the ds is awsome, with a very soft landing.Well hope i didnt bore anyone with this long *** post and any information would be great. Tim(x250rdude)

First of all I used to hit that damn rev limiter all the time too. I bought a wood stage I kit, and that sovled that problem. According to the article in the latest 4 wheel action, wood only sells the kits not separate parts. Wood Rotax says the valves have enough clearance so it's OK to overrev, I haven't had a problem yet. I just bent a front rim today. Do you know if they can be repaired?

The springs that are on the pipe by the rear shock rattle on mine at certain rpms, hope thats it. On the bent rim you really don't have anything to loose by trying to straighten it.

Luba you should not have a problem banging out the dents in your ds rims.My 2 front rims were bent pretty bad but I was really amazed on how easy they bent back to place, especially being douglas red lables.Im pretty bummed out that you told me that ron wood will not sell the cdi box separetly since I really dont have $1500 right now to spend on the whole stage 1 kit.Oh well,im sure it will be just a matter of time before someone else makes one.Desertds, thanks for the info on the rear springs rattling.I kinda thought it was coming from the exaust but was not sure.Im planning on getting a complete big gun exaust as soon as it is released for the 650 which last i talked to them should be in the next few weeks.

Yes the springs on the pipe do rattle a bit but before you go nuts trying to figure out the other rattle I will tell you what it is. On the front ball joints that say "problem solver" there is a black retaining clip of some sort....tap it with your finger. You will see they are loose in there and will make a noise at certain speeds. Or maybe mine are the only ones that rattle?

The Douglas wheels are spun aluminum, so they should be easy to get straightened at a rim shop, if there is one near you. That's one of the main reasons for going with spun aluminum, easy to repair, even in the desert during a race. Also, they are much lighter than cast aluminum or steel.

Cast would also break instead of bend. Desert racers would bend them back into shape and use some sort of air pump or the flame trick(lighter fluid around the bead of the tire and ignite, air rushes out of the rim to fead the flames and seals the bead) and/or CO2 cartridges to inflate the tire enough to get them to the next pit stop.

It would be nice if Douglas would come out with fluted wheels for extra strength without much of a wieght increase like Centerlines, though, that is probably copyright protected or something. They could make them even lighter, but stronger.

Supposedly, the guy making the turbos for Banshees is working on a composite/uluminum wheel that is lighter than aluminum and 10 times as strong for the same or cheaper. We can only hope, especially us DS owners.

Laters,

The rev limiter is sold seperate, $298. I don't have one yet but I've been checking. Your engine noise could be your valves needing adjustment, it is supposed to be performed at your 10 hour maintainence I believe.

I thought I have heard some strange noise from the head as well. I have had my 10 hour service, but I seriously doubt that the dealer adjusted the valve clearance.

I would keep checking with CT Racing and Duncan Racing for a rev box that is cheap - less than $50.

you may want to check with your local BMW dealer, the rev box may be the stock unit off of the f650.
