Raptor weighs more then Predator?
#1
In the newest atv sport shootout, they put the wet weights of all the atv's in the shootout. What really suprised me is, the dry weight of the Raptor is 398lbs, but the wet weight came to a whooping 451lbs. The Predator dry is 415lbs, but the wet only came to 444lbs. It looks like the dry weight of the Raptor is a little off. They weighed the atv's on Nascar type scale.

Anybody ever weigh their quad dry on a scale? I find it hard to believe that 3.5 gallons of gas, 2.5 quarts of oil and what a gallon of anti freeze weighs 53lbs. Whats a gallon of water weigh? 9lbs? Gas the same? Thats 31.5 lbs + 1 gallon of Antifreeze= 40.5 lbs. Whats 2.5 quarts of oil weigh? Maybe 5lbs at best. 45lbs worth of wetness. Thats a lot of wetness. Where is the difference coming in? The Raptor holds 3.2 gallons of gas, the Predator holds 3.25. This means the Predator will have slightly more weight from gas.
That leaves the oil, the brake fluid, and the antifreeze. Hard to believe the capacities are that much different to make up the 17 lb difference in dry weight let alone the Raptor coming in another 7 lbs heavier. This is a total swing of 24 lbs.

??? Sound to me that their scale is wayyyy off! I've never read anywhere that any of these bikes weight wet the numbers they reported(I've heard in various publications that the Raptor is 418 lbs. wet). How does 3.2 gallons of gas, 2.5 quarts of oil and 1 quart weight 50 some lbs? ATV sport has never liked the Raptor anyhow, it has allway scored much lower in their shoot-outs compared to the other mags and websites.

Not that I am trying to prove that a Raptor is lighter than a Predator, this isn't my angle - whatever is lighter is lighter. Bad reporting is my angle...especially when you pay for the information that arrives in your ATV Sport Magazine. It is okay with me if riders like one versus the other or thinks it handles better - opinion is just that. However, weight is strictly science.
According to the ATV Sport article in April 2003 article, oil weighs 1.7484 lbs/qt, mixed coolant weights 8 lbs/gal. Fuel weighs 6.1333 lbs/gal.
According to the this same magazine in the December 20002 article versus the Z-400, the Raptor holds 3.2 gallons of gas, 1.4 qts of coolant, 2.4 qts of oil. It said the Raptor weighs 418 lbs with 1 gallon of gas. At worst, another 2.2 gallons takes it to 431.49 lbs. And if you do the math backwards, the Raptor would have a dry weight of 404.87 lbs. The April article states it is 398 lbs though.
Given that the article states the Predator weighs in at 444 wet and 415 dry then we can surmize the following (all in lbs):
444.0000 lbs Wet
19.9332 lbs (3.25 gal gas)
--------------
424.0668 lbs
414.0000 lbs (dry weight)
---------------
10.0668 lbs of oil and coolant
Same scenario of the Raptor (all in lbs):
451.0000 lbs wet
19.6265 lbs (3.2 gallons of gas)
--------------
431.3735
398.0000 (dry weight)
------------
33.3735 lbs of oil and coolant
There you have it. The Raptor has an extra 23.3067 lbs of oil and coolant over and above what they put into the Predator.
Unfortuanately, all this doesn't add up to anything but a bad rap for ATV Sport.
