03 z400 or 03 scrambler 500 4x4?? help!

im planning on buying one of the two, i know this is apples and oranges, but help me make an informed decision. i like the scrambler because of power, & 4x4 plus its stable, i think the z 400 would have less maitenance though, im not sure about stability because ive never ridden one. i like to ride with a fairly fast pace. and ride on all types of terrain except sand. i really need the 4x4, but i know i could get buy without it for the most part. also what kind of warranty does suzuki have & how good is it, & is their any problems with the z400 yet yhanks for info.

You are almost certainly going to get several responses endorsing the Scrambler, and I would concur. For two years my wife and I have rode Yamaha Warriors, but I have always wanted a machine with 4x4 that I could take hunting and have it still be versatile enough to handle weekend playing. I did not want to give up what I thought I had with the Yamaha Warrior, so I sold the wife’s Warrior and put her on the Scrambler. Her riding ability improved 100%. She was more confident and having more fun. Then hunting season came and I took over the Scrambler. Now I am hooked. I am looking to buy another 500 4x4 and selling the Warrior. The Scrambler is the ideal ATV (manufactured today) for where I ride and whom I ride with, which is not only the wife. Some of our riding friends are not as skilled as we are so the Scrambler is more forgiving (comfortable, no overheating, no excessive clutching, easy to put in reserve for backing up and helping someone out…or towing them out). You have numerous factors to consider so my advice is to put emphasis on where you ride and whom you ride with.

The four wheel drive on the Scrambler is a feature you can't live without once you have it. It takes you where no z400 will go yet the sport side of the Scrambler will burn up the trails right with the Z. I mud my Scrambler with utility 4x4s and do the dunes of Little Sahara with sport quads. I've thought about buying a Sportsman but I'm afriad I would lose to much of the sporty fun. The Scrambler hasn't let me down yet.

The Scrambler is the best of both worlds. If you want to go trailriding and you dont need the 4x4 then you turn it off and you would not even know it is there. There are also alot of mods to really make it quick. I have a highly moded Trailblazer that I love now that its not a snail, but sometimes I wish I would have the 4x4 option. It has not been that much of a problem without it except when you go out riding with friends that all have 4x4's and want to play in the mud. I have to stay in the shallow mud while they are playing in the deep.

Consider this, I have a TLD Predator and a Scrambler. I got my Predator tht first week of Dec. it has 5 hours on it. I've probably but 15-20 Hrs on my Scrambler since then. I ride with a group of guys that all ride jap quads. and have no problems hanging with them. It's a very reliable machine too! Also if your considering the Z400 remember it handles like a dream. Although the suspension leaves alot to be desired. Hope this helps.

I guess my reply would be to decide what you want to to the most. I have a 2003 scrambler and my friend has a z400. As far as speed and handling the z has the scrambler beat hands down. But as soon and you get into a little bit of deep snow or mud the scrambler has the z beat. As soon as you get in the z starts spinning and the scrambler just goes. Both are good bikes and both are fast. It just depends on want you want to do. But i would look into the predator 500 on paper it is just better.

I have a scram and a raptor
I like them equally for different reasons.
Do you want a 'nimble tank' or a 400cc 'rice rocket'.
If you live in the cold snowy climate I'd get the Scram.

I got rid of my Honda 250r's for a Polaris Scrambler 400 4x4.
I can go anywhere in 2 wheel drive that I can in 4 wheel drive. It just takes more energy, skill, and experience. I am also getting a little older, thats why I wanted the 4x4. But, as it turns out I don't really like riding in the mud anymore, so I really never use 4x4 (I've ridden my wifes Trailblazer through every mudhole I wet through in 4x4, and yes I did get alot muddier, but I made it through all of them in 2 wheel drive). Yes, it is nice to have 4x4 when I come across a mudhole. Compared to the 250r, I guess I would say thay reverse is more important than 4x4 - it gets used a lot more and will get you out of a jam more often.
So you need to answer the who, what, where, whens:
1. WHO are you riding with?
2. WHAT type of riding / activities will you do most? (ie:fast trail riding, atv camping, hunting, chores, etc.)
3. WHERE are you going to ride? (dry or wet? sand, mud, snow, hardpack?)
4. WHEN are you going to ride? (are you going to ride daily? are you going to take weekend trips? are you going to ride at organized events? are you an ocassional rider? - year round or seasonal?)
Buy whats right for YOU, thats why there are some many makes and models of ATVs.
I hope this helped. Good Luck.
